What is Unfriend Watch?
Unfriend Watch presents itself as a useful tool to determine 'who unfriended you on Facebook' - "See Who Unfriended You, With Facebook Unfriend Watch, your life may never be the same."
Although some users may believe that this app is legitimate, Unfriend Watch is categorized as adware and a potentially unwanted program (PUP). After Unfriend Watch stealthily infiltrates the system, it delivers various types of intrusive online advertisements and collects various system information.
Unfriend Watch displays many advertisements including pop-up, pop-under, banner, and other display ads. To achieve this, Unfriend Watch employs a virtual layer allowing placement of any graphical content on visited websites.
The displayed content does not originate from the visited website and conceals underlying content, thereby diminishing the Internet browsing experience. Furthermore, displayed advertisements redirect to various websites that might be infectious - clicking them can lead to further computer infections.
This application collects various information and later shares it with third parties. Note that the collected information may contain personally identifiable details and could be misused to generate revenue. If you are concerned with your privacy and Internet browsing safety, uninstall Unfriend Watch immediately.
Unfriend Watch claims regarding online advertising:
Advertisements: Unfriend Watch is entirely free to use, but may show advertisements while installed. These promotions help us keep Unfriend Watch awesome and free for you.
Unfriend Watch shares many similarities with other adware-type applications that also install without users' consent including iWebar, RightCoupon, Lightning newtab, MovieDea, and Browser Shop.
They claim to provide many useful features, however, these fake promises are simply attempts to trick users to install. Neither Unfriend Watch, nor any of this other adware, provides the features promised. These applications display intrusive online advertisements and collect personally identifiable data to generate revenue for the developers.
How did Unfriend Watch install on my computer?
The developers of Unfriend Watch distribute this application using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' - stealth installation of additional applications with regular software. Many users rush the download and installation processes without paying close enough attention, and therefore, bundling is popular and effective.
Some users are unaware that rogue apps are concealed within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' download and installation settings - by skipping this section, they inadvertently install bogus applications.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Applications should be downloaded and installed with caution. To avoid computer infections, closely inspect each step of the software download procedure and ensure that only the selected app is downloaded. In addition, applications should be installed using the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options - this will reveal any bundled software listed for installation and allow you to opt-out.
