Extreme Blocker Adware

Also Known As: Ads by Extreme Blocker
Type: Adware
Damage level: Medium

What is Extreme Blocker?

Extreme Blocker is a dubious browser plug-in that supposedly blocks online advertisements displayed on visited websites - "Using Extreme Blockerer, you can now go ahead and surf all you want. The ads will forever be invisible. Not even one will stop you from surfing freely."

At first glance, the features offered may seem legitimate and useful, however, the Extreme Blocker add-on is categorized as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware.  After Extreme Blocker successfully installs on Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox, it delivers intrusive online advertisements and gathering various user/system information.

Extreme Blocker adware

This adware generates intrusive online advertisements (for example, coupon, banner, pop-up, etc.) using a virtual layer, which enables placement of any graphical content on visited websites. In doing so, Extreme Blocker significantly diminishes the Internet browsing experience, since the displayed ads conceal underlying content of visited websites.

Some ads can redirect to infectious sites, thereby causing high-risk computer infections. As with regular adware, Extreme Blocker tracks Internet browsing activity and continually gathers various user/system information, some of which may contain personally identifiable details.

The developers later share this information with third parties, and thus, having Extreme Blocker installed on your system can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. You are strongly advised to uninstall this app immediately.

Adware-type applications often have similar behavior. There are hundreds of apps (for example, BestSaveForYou, Vidzy, Super Browser, and StormAlerts) claiming to improve the Internet browsing experience in various ways. Adware-type applications such as Extreme Blocker deliver fake promises simply to trick users to install.

The purpose of Extreme Blocker, and other similar applications, is to display advertisements and collect information to generate revenue - they deliver no real value for the user.

How did Extreme Blocker install on my computer?

The developers of Extreme Blocker distribute this application using a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' - stealth installation of third party applications with the chosen software. Many users are unaware that developers intentionally hide rogue applications within the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' settings.

Thus, by skipping this section, users can inadvertently install applications such as Extreme Blocker. The developers are concerned only with the amount of revenue generated, and thus, do not properly disclose installation of deceptive software.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

Express caution during the download and installation processes. Closely analyze each step and ensure that only the chosen software is downloaded/installed.

In addition, the download and installation processes should be performed with the 'Custom' or 'Advanced' options, rather than 'Quick' or 'Typical' - this will reveal any hidden third party apps listed for installation and allow you to decline them.
