Rooster865qq ransomware removal instructions

What is Rooster865qq?

Discovered by Raby, Rooster865qq is a piece of malicious software, belonging to the Maoloa ransomware family. This program is designed to encrypt victim's data and demand a ransom for its decryption. As Rooster865qq encrypts, it renames all files with the ".Rooster865qq" extension; therefore a file like "1.jpg" would appear as "1.jpg.Rooster865qq", and so on. After this process is complete, an executable file titled "HOW TO BACK YOUR FILES.exe" is created on the desktop.

The executable file contains the ransom note. It tells victims to follow the instructions to recover their data. They will need a decryption tool/software to decrypt their data, so they will need to contact the developers of Rooster865qq. Contact must be established via the email address written in the note. The letter users are to send must contain their personal ID, which is also listed in "HOW TO BACK YOUR FILES.exe". To verify that recovery is possible, victims can attach one text or image file for free decryption. After this is done, further instructions will be provided on how to purchase the decryption tools from the cyber criminals (i.e. how to pay the ransom). The message emphasizes that only they (the criminals behind Rooster865qq) can decrypt the data. Users are warned that running an anti-virus software may delete the executable file and then all of the contact information will be lost. Furthermore, manual decryption (without the involvement of this ransomware's developers) will result in permanent data loss. The decoders of other victims are told to be ineffective, as every encryption key is generated individually, therefore is unique. Unfortunately, in most cases of ransomware-type infections - decryption with third party software is impossible. Since these malicious programs use strong encryptions, files encrypted with them can usually be decrypted only by them. However, it is strongly advised against paying and/or communicating with cyber criminals, these individuals are not to be trusted. Often, despite paying - users do not receive the promised tools, which leaves their data beyond repair. Removing Rooster865qq will not restore the compromised files, but it will prevent this malware from further encryptions. The data can be restored from a backup, if one was made prior to the attack and stored in a different location.

Rooster865qq decrypt instructions

All ransomware encrypts files and demands payment for decryption tools/software. ForvCYBORGSanders4 are a few examples of malicious software similar to Rooster865qq. There are some key differences between ransomware infections, such as the cryptographic algorithms the programs use (symmetric or asymmetric) and the size of the ransom. Unless this type of malware is still in development and/or has certain flaws/bugs - manual decryption is impossible. To protect files against data encrypting and damaging attacks, users are recommended to keep backups in remote servers and/or unplugged storage devices. Ideally, multiple backup copies should be stored in separate locations.

How did ransomware infect my computer?

Ransomware and other malware is typically spread through spam campaigns, trojans, untrustworthy download sources, fake program updaters and illegal activation ("cracking") tools. Spam campaigns are used to send out thousands of deceptive emails, containing virulent attachments (or web-links leading to them). Usually, the letters are disguised as "official", "important", "urgent" and similar priority mail. Opening the attached files is the source of an infection. These attachments come in various formats, such as executable and archive files, Microsoft Office and PDF documents, JavaScript, etc. Trojans are malicious programs, which operate by downloading/installing additional malware. Untrustworthy download sources (e.g. Peer-to-Peer sharing networks, unofficial and free file-hosting websites, third party downloaders, etc.) are full of dubious and potentially harmful content. Fake updaters abuse the flaws in outdated software and/or simply install malware, instead of the promised updates. Illegal activation tools ("cracks") infect systems similarly, by downloading/installing malicious programs rather than activating licensed product.

How to protect yourself from ransomware infections?

It is recommended not to open suspicious and/or irrelevant mail, especially such emails received from unknown senders. Attachments (or links) found in suspect emails must never be opened, as that can lead to an infection. Users should only use official and verified download sources. Software should be activated and updated via tools/functions provided by genuine developers; both illegal activation ("cracking") tools and third party updaters are considered to be a risk to device safety. It is strongly advised to have a dependable anti-virus/anti-spyware software installed and kept up-to-date; as well as used for regular system scans and removal of detected threats. If your computer is already infected with Rooster865qq, we recommend running a scan with Spyhunter for Windows to automatically eliminate this ransomware.

To restore individual files encrypted by this ransomware, try using Windows Previous Versions feature. This method is only effective if the System Restore function was enabled on an infected operating system. Note that some variants of Rooster865qq are known to remove Shadow Volume Copies of the files, so this method may not work on all computers.

To restore a file, right-click over it, go into Properties, and select the Previous Versions tab. If the relevant file has a Restore Point, select it and click the "Restore" button.

If you cannot start your computer in Safe Mode with Networking (or with Command Prompt), boot your computer using a rescue disk. Some variants of ransomware disable Safe Mode making its removal complicated. For this step, you require access to another computer.

To regain control of the files encrypted by Rooster865qq, you can also try using a program called Shadow Explorer. More information on how to use this program is available here.
