Rooster865qq ransomware removal instructions

What is Rooster865qq?

Discovered by Raby, Rooster865qq is malicious software belonging to the Maoloa ransomware family. This program is designed to encrypt victims' data and demand ransom payments for decryption. When Rooster865qq encrypts files, it renames them with the ".Rooster865qq" extension. Therefore, "1.jpg" becomes "1.jpg.Rooster865qq", and so on for all affected files. After this process is complete, an executable file called "HOW TO BACK YOUR FILES.exe" is created and stored on the desktop.

The executable file contains the ransom message, which urges victims to follow the instructions to recover their data. They require a decryption tool/software to decrypt their data and are encouraged to contact the developers of Rooster865qq via the email address provided in the message. The user's email must contain a personal ID, which is also listed in "HOW TO BACK YOUR FILES.exe". To prove that recovery is possible, victims are permitted to attach one text or image file free of charge for decryption. Further instructions are then provided about how to purchase decryption tools from the cyber criminals (i.e., how to pay the ransom). The message emphasizes that only they (the criminals behind Rooster865qq) can decrypt the data. Users are warned that running anti-virus software might delete the executable file, and then all contact information is lost. Furthermore, manual decryption (without the involvement of the ransomware developers) will result in permanent data loss. The decoders (tools/keys) of other victims are ineffective, since each encryption key is generated individually, and is unique. Unfortunately, in most cases of ransomware-type infections, decryption with third party software is impossible. Since these malicious programs use strong encryption, files can only be recovered by the original encryption software. Despite this, you are advised against paying or communicating with cyber criminals. These people can never be trusted. Despite paying, many users receive none of the promised tools, which leaves their data inaccessible. Removing Rooster865qq will not restore the compromised files, but it will prevent this malware from further encryption. The data can be restored from a backup, if one was made prior to the attack and was stored in a different location.

Rooster865qq decrypt instructions

All ransomware encrypts files and demands payment for decryption tools/software. ForvCYBORG, and Sanders4 are some examples of malicious software similar to Rooster865qq. There are some key differences between ransomware infections, such as the cryptographic algorithms the programs use (symmetric or asymmetric) and size of ransom. Unless the malware is still in development and/or has certain flaws/bugs, manual decryption is impossible. To protect files against data encryption and damaging attacks, keep backups on remote servers and/or unplugged storage devices. Ideally, multiple backup copies should be stored in separate locations.

How did ransomware infect my computer?

Ransomware and other malware is typically proliferated through spam campaigns, trojans, untrustworthy download sources, fake program updaters and illegal activation ("cracking") tools. Spam campaigns are used to send out thousands of deceptive emails containing dangerous attachments (or web-links leading to them). The letters are usually disguised as "official", "important", "urgent", or similar priority mail. Opening the attached files is the source of infection. These attachments come in various formats, such as executable and archive files, Microsoft Office and PDF documents, JavaScript, etc. Trojans are malicious programs, which operate by downloading/installing additional malware. Untrustworthy download sources (e.g. Peer-to-Peer sharing networks, unofficial and free file-hosting websites, third party downloaders, etc.) are full of dubious and potentially harmful content. Fake updaters abuse flaws in outdated software and/or simply install malware, rather than the promised updates. Illegal activation tools ("cracks") infect systems similarly - by downloading/installing malicious programs rather than activating licensed products.

How to protect yourself from ransomware infections

Do not open suspicious and/or irrelevant emails, especially if received from unknown senders. Attachments or links found in suspect emails must never be opened, as this can lead to an infection. Use official and verified download sources. Software should be activated and updated via tools/functions provided by genuine developers - illegal activation ("cracking") tools and third party updaters are a risk to device safety. Have reputable anti-virus/anti-spyware software installed and kept up-to-date. Perform regular system scans and remove any detected threats. If your computer is already infected with Rooster865qq, we recommend running a scan with Malwarebytes for Windows to automatically eliminate this ransomware.

To restore individual files encrypted by this ransomware, try using Windows Previous Versions feature. This method is only effective if the System Restore function was enabled on an infected operating system. Note that some variants of Rooster865qq are known to remove Shadow Volume Copies of the files, so this method may not work on all computers.

To restore a file, right-click over it, go into Properties, and select the Previous Versions tab. If the relevant file has a Restore Point, select it and click the "Restore" button.

Restoring files encrypted by CryptoDefense

If you cannot start your computer in Safe Mode with Networking (or with Command Prompt), boot your computer using a rescue disk. Some variants of ransomware disable Safe Mode making its removal complicated. For this step, you require access to another computer.

To regain control of the files encrypted by Rooster865qq, you can also try using a program called Shadow Explorer. More information on how to use this program is available here.
