How to stop redirects to mybrowser-search.com

Also Known As: mybrowser-search.com browser hijacker
Damage level: Medium

What is mybrowser-search.com?

mybrowser-search.com is a dubious website classified as a fake search engine. These bogus search engines are typically endorsed as useful tools, which provide improved search results, increase browsing security, etc., however, they are seldom capable of providing useful results and often monitor users' browsing activity.

They are promoted by unwanted extensions called browser hijackers. This software makes modifications to browser settings, restricts/denies access to them, and gathers browsing-related information.

More about mybrowser-search.com

Bogus search engines are promoted by browser hijackers, which target Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer and other popular browsers. Following successful installation, they assign the addresses of fake search tools as the default search engine, homepage, and new tab/window URLs.

Therefore, each new browser tab/window opened and each search query typed into the URL bar redirects to the promoted address (e.g. mybrowser-search.com). Even if the promoted search engines can provide search results, they are inaccurate and/or promote untrusted, malicious websites.

In most cases, however, they cannot generate any results and redirect to or cause redirection chains (consisting of various untrusted sites, such as other bogus search engines) ending with Yahoo, Google, Bing and other genuine search engines.

Furthermore, recovering an affected browser hijacker is impossible without removing the software hijacking it, since any changes users attempt to make are automatically reset (if access to browser settings is permitted at all). As mentioned, most browser hijackers have data tracking capabilities.

They can monitor browsing activity (URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries typed) and collect sensitive information extracted from it (IP addresses, geolocations and other details). The gathered data is likely to contain personally identifiable information, which the developers often share/sell to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals).

Therefore, the presence of data-tracking software on browsers/systems can result in financial loss, serious privacy issues and even identity theft. To ensure device integrity and user safety, remove all dubious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins without delay.

Browser hijackers in general

Browser hijackers typically seem legitimate and harmless. QuericsSearchTask Manager Tab, and File Conversion Now are some other examples of software within this category. People are often tempted into download/installation with offers of various "useful" functionalities, however, these features are rarely operational - even if they do work, it is not as promised.

In fact, this applies to most rogue apps. The only purpose of these unwanted apps is to generate revenue for the developers. Unwanted apps can hijack browsers, promote fake search engines, force-open untrusted and malicious web pages, run intrusive advertisement campaigns and gather private data.

How did mybrowser-search.com install on my computer?

Dubiou apps are often downloaded/installed with other programs. This deceptive marketing method of pre-packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions is called "bundling". Rushing download/installation processes (e.g. ignoring terms, skipping steps, using pre-set options, etc.) increases the risk of unintentionally allowing dubious and bundled content onto the system.

Some unwanted apps have "official" promotional pages from which they can be downloaded. Intrusive ads proliferate these applications as well. When clicked, they can execute scripts to download/install shady apps without users' consent.

How to avoid installation of unwanted applications

You are advised to research all software prior to download/installation or purchase. All downloads must be done from official and verified sources. Unofficial and free file-hosting (freeware), Peer-to-Peer sharing networks (BitTorrent, eMule, Gnutella, etc.) and other third party downloaders are untrusted, since they offer deceptive and bundled content.

When downloading/installing, it is important to read the terms, study all available options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out of supplementary apps, tools, functions and other additions. You are advised to exercise caution when browsing.

Intrusive ads may seem normal, however, they can redirect to dubious sites (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, and so on). If you encounter ads/redirects of this kind, check the system and remove all suspect applications and browser extensions immediately.

If your computer is already infected with browser hijackers, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate it.
