What is InterfaceSample?

InterfaceSample is an adware-type application with browser hijacker characteristics. It operates by running intrusive ad campaigns, modifying browsers and promoting fake search engines. This app promotes Safe Finder through akamaihd.net. Additionally, most adware infections and browser hijackers gather browsing-related information.

Due to the dubious techniques used to proliferate InterfaceSample, it is also classified as a Potentially Unwanted Application (PUA).

Adware enables the placement of pop-ups, banners, coupons, surveys and other intrusive advertisements typically, on any visited site. This significantly diminishes the browsing experience, as the ads limit web page visibility and browsing speed.

Furthermore, when clicked, the ads redirect to various untrusted/malicious websites and some can even stealthily download/install rogue software (e.g. PUAs). Browser hijackers reassign the homepage, default search engine and new tab/window URLs to the addresses of bogus search engines.

Therefore, each browser tab/window opened and web search made through the URL bar redirects to the promoted address. InterfaceSample promotes (via akamaihd.net) Safe Finder also by making these modifications and causing redirects.

Fake search engines are usually unable to generate any results, and so they tend to redirect (or cause redirection chains leading) to Yahoo, Google, Bing and other legitimate sites.

Recovering a hijacked browser is impossible, without removing the software affecting it, since browser hijackers can restrict or deny access to browser settings and/or undo any permitted changes made. As mentioned, it is very likely that InterfaceSample has data tracking capabilities.

Most PUAs (adware and browser hijackers included) can monitor browsing activity (URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries typed, etc.) and gather personal information extracted from it (IP addresses, geolocations and other details). The collected data is usually shared with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals), seeking to misuse it for profit.

GeneralCache, Tituricsec, BasicDesktop and MacAppsHD are some examples of other adware-types apps. They often seem normal and harmless. Users are enticed into download/installation with a wide variety of "useful" features, however, the functionality promised is rarely operational.

This is true of most PUAs. The only purpose of these unwanted applications is to generate revenue for the developers. PUAs deliver intrusive advertisement campaigns, hijack browsers, cause unwanted redirect and collect private information.

How did InterfaceSample install on my computer?

PUAs are distributed via the download/installation set-ups of other products. This deceptive marketing method of packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions is called "bundling". Rushing downloads/installations (e.g. ignoring terms, skipping steps and sections, etc.) increases the risk of unintentionally allowing bundled content onto the device.

Scan your Mac with Combo Cleaner:

Remove malicious extensions from Internet browsers

Remove malicious Safari extensions:

Open the Safari browser, from the menu bar, select "Safari" and click "Preferences...".

In the preferences window, select "Extensions" and look for any recently-installed suspicious extensions. When located, click the "Uninstall" button next to it/them. Note that you can safely uninstall all extensions from your Safari browser - none are crucial for regular browser operation.

Remove malicious extensions from Google Chrome:

Click the Chrome menu icon (at the top right corner of Google Chrome), select "More Tools" and click "Extensions". Locate all recently-installed suspicious extensions, select these entries and click "Remove".
