How to remove SearchNetCharacter adware from your operating system

Also Known As: Ads by SearchNetCharacter
Type: Mac Virus
Damage level: Medium

What is SearchNetCharacter?

SearchNetCharacter is rogue software classified as adware and possessing browser hijacker characteristics. Following successful installation, SearchNetCharacter runs intrusive advertisement campaigns, makes alterations to browser settings and promotes fake search engines.

Additionally, most adware-type apps and browser hijackers can monitor users' browsing activity. Due to the dubious tactics employed to proliferate SearchNetCharacter, it is classified as a Potentially Unwanted Application (PUA). This app has been observed being distributed via fake Adobe Flash Player updates.

Note that bogus software updaters/installers are used to distribute PUAs, Trojans, ransomware, and other malware.

Adware delivers pop-ups, banners, coupons, surveys, full-page and other intrusive ads. These significantly diminish the browsing experience, as they overlay web page content and reduce browsing speed. As well as being a nuisance, these ads are a threat to device/user safety.

When clicked, intrusive advertisements redirect to various untrusted/malicious sites and some can even stealthily download/install rogue software (e.g. PUAs). Browser hijackers reassign the homepage, default search engine and new tab/window URLs to the addresses of bogus search engines.

Therefore, with a browser hijacker installed, each new browser tab/window opened and search query typed into the URL bar redirects to the promoted address. Furthermore, fake search engines are seldom capable of providing search results, and so they tend to redirect to Google, Yahoo, Bing and other legitimate sites.

Browser hijackers can also undo any changes users attempt to make to their browsers and/or restrict/deny access to the browser settings outright. As mentioned, most PUAs (adware and browser hijackers included) have data tracking capabilities.

They can monitor browsing activity (URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries typed, etc.) and gather personal information derived from it (IP addresses, geolocations and other vulnerable details). The collected data is then shared with and/or sold to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals).

In summary, the presence of unwanted software on devices can result in system infections, financial loss, serious privacy issues and even identity theft. Therefore, you are strongly advised to immediately remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins.

UltraSearchSystemMultiplySearch and ValidGeneration are some examples of other adware-type applications. They may seem legitimate and offer a broad range of "useful" features, however, the functions promised are rarely operational. This applies to most PUAs.

The sole purpose of these unwanted apps is to generate revenue for the developers. Rather than delivering any real value, PUAs can run intrusive advertisement campaigns, modify browsers, cause redirects, collect browsing-related and personally identifiable information.

How did SearchNetCharacter install on my computer?

PUAs are often downloaded/installed together with other products. This deceptive marketing technique of pre-packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions is called "bundling".

By rushing through download/installation (e.g. ignoring terms, skipping steps and sections, using "Quick/Express" settings, etc.), many users risk unintentionally allowing bundled content into their devices. Intrusive advertisements proliferate PUAs as well.

When clicked, the ads can execute scripts to download/install these applications without users' permission. Some PUAs have "official" download web pages.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications

You are advised to research all software products, prior to download/installation and/or purchase. All downloads must be done from official and verified sources, since untrusted channels such as unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks and other third party downloaders can infiltrate rogue programs and files.

When downloading/installing, it is important to read the terms, explore all possible options, use the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings and opt-out of supplementary apps, tools, features, and so on. Intrusive ads may seem legitimate and harmless, however, they can redirect to dubious pages (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, etc.).

If you encounter these advertisements or redirects, check the system and remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins without delay. If your computer is already infected with SearchNetCharacter, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
