How to remove StandartConsoleSearch adware from Mac?

What is StandartConsoleSearch?

StandartConsoleSearch is an adware-type application with browser hijacker qualities. It operates by delivering intrusive advertisement campaigns and by making modifications to browser settings - in order to promote illegitimate search engines. Furthermore, most adware-types and browser hijackers have data tracking abilities, which are employed to spy on browsing activity. Since few users download/install StandartConsoleSearch intentionally, it is classified as a PUA (Potentially Unwanted Application) as well. Once of the dubious techniques used to proliferate StandartConsoleSearch is distribution via fake Adobe Flash Player updates. It is noteworthy that illegitimate software updaters/installers spread not only various PUAs but also trojans, ransomware and other malware.

Adware enables the placement of pop-ups, banners, coupons, surveys, full-page and other intrusive advertisements - typically, on any visited website. These ads are significant nuisance, as they limit browsing speed and site visibility (by overlaying webpage content). Furthermore, once clicked on, intrusive adverts redirect to untrustworthy/malicious pages and some can even stealthily download/install software (e.g. PUAs). Browser hijackers assign the addresses of illegitimate web searchers as browsers' homepage, default search engine and new tab/window URLs. Hence, with a browser hijacker installed: every new browser tab/window opened and web search done via the URL bar - redirect to the promoted address. Fake search engines are rarely able to generate search results, so they redirect to Yahoo, Bing, Google and other legitimate ones. Recovering a hijacked browser is impossible without removing the software affecting it. Since browser hijackers can restrict/deny access to the browser's settings and/or reset any permitted changes made. What is more, most PUAs can track data. Data of interest includes: visited URLs, viewed webpages, searched queries, IP addresses, geolocations and other personally identifiable information. The collected data is then shared with and/or sold to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals). To summarize, presence of unwanted software on devices can lead to system infections, severe privacy issues, financial losses and even identity theft. Therefore, to ensure device integrity and user safety, all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins must be eliminated without delay.

UltraSearchSystemMultiplySearchValidGenerationAssistiveFile - are some examples of software within the adware classification. It appears ordinary and harmless. Users are enticed into download/installation with offers of various "useful" functionalities. However, the promised features are usually nonoperational. In fact, this is true of practically all PUAs. Functionality and user safety are irrelevant, since the only purpose of unwanted apps is to generate profit for the developers. PUAs are designed to run intrusive ad campaigns, hijack browsers, cause redirects and gather private information.

How did StandartConsoleSearch install on my computer?

PUAs can be downloaded/installed together with other software. This deceptive marketing method of pre-packing regular products with unwanted or malicious additions - is called "bundling". Rushed downloads/installations (e.g. skipped steps and sections, used "Easy/Express" settings, etc.) - increase the risk of inadvertently allowing bundled content into the device. Intrusive adverts also proliferate PUAs. Upon being clicked, the ads can execute scripts to download/install these applications without user consent. Select PUAs have "official" download webpages.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

It is recommended to research software before download/installation. Only official and verified download channels must be used. Unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks (BitTorrent, Gnutella, eMule, etc.) and other third party downloaders - commonly offer harmful and/or bundled content; due to this, these sources are deemed to be untrustworthy and are advised against use. When downloading/installing, it is important to read terms, study all possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out from additional apps, tools, features, and so forth. Intrusive advertisements typically appear legitimate, however they redirect to various unreliable and malicious sites (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, and many others). In case of encounters with adverts and/or redirects of this kind, the system must be inspected and all dubious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins - immediately removed from it. If your computer is already infected with StandartConsoleSearch, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
