How to remove searchgoose.com browser hijacker from Mac?

What is searchgoose.com?

Searchgoose.com is the address of a fake search engine and most fake search engines are promoted by potentially unwanted applications (PUAs) that are classified as browser hijackers. Therefore, if a browser opens the searchgoose.com address on certain occasions, it means that it has some browser hijacker installed on it. These apps care called PUAs because most users download and install them unknowingly.

searchgoose.com browser hijacker on a Mac computer

Typically, a browser hijacker promotes a fake search engine by changing these browser settings: address of a default search engine, homepage and new tab. Therefore, when a browser has a browser hijacker installed on it, users are forced to visit a certain address (in this case searchgoose.com) when they open a browser, new tab and enter search queries into URL bar. Searchgoose.com provides results by Bing, Ask, Yahoo and may provide results generated by some other search engine. It redirects users to bing.com, ask.com, search.yahoo.com (or other address) via search-fine.com - another shady address. Users can remove searchgoose.com from browser settings only when the app that is designed to promote it is no longer installed. Another reason to get rid of any installed browser hijacker is that apps of this type can be designed to collect browsing-related information. For example, entered search queries, IP addresses, addresses of visited websites, geolocations, etc. Sometimes they gather sensitive, personal information as well. Moreover, gathered information may be sold to third parties (potentially cyber criminals), it may be misused to generate revenue in other ways as well.

Searchgoose.com is similar to searchmarquis.com, although, there are many other fake search engines on the Internet. For example, search.dominantmethod.com, search.trustenviroment.com and search.getstranto.club. It is worthwhile to mention search engines of this kind can be designed to generate their own results that may include links to untrustworthy websites. Therefore, neither fake search engines and/or browser hijackers should be used.

How did searchgoose.com install on my computer?

Most users download, install PUAs together with other, desired programs. It happens when unwanted apps are included in their download and/or installation setups as additional offers and users do not decline them. As a rule, offers to download and/or install additionally included apps can be declined in "Custom", "Advanced" and settings of setups. When users download and/or install programs that have PUAs included in their setups without changing those settings, they download and/or install those apps too. This distribution method of unwanted apps is called "bundling". Also, unwanted downloads and installations can be caused by clicking deceptive advertisements that are designed to execute certain scripts.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

If a download and/or installation setup contains settings like "Custom", "Advanced", they should not be left unchecked. It is common that those settings mention offers to download and/or install unwanted applications. Programs (and files) should be downloaded from official websites and through direct links. Third party downloaders, installers, unofficial websites, Peer-to-Peer networks (e.g., torrent clients, eMule), and other similar channels, sources should not be used as tools neither to download or install anything. It is common that they are used to distribute various unwanted applications. Ads that are displayed on questionable websites should not be clicked as well, they can open untrustworthy pages or cause download, installation of some unwanted app. If there are any suspicious, unwanted extensions, plug-ins and/or add-ons already installed on a browser or programs of this kind installed on the operating system, then they should be uninstalled right away. If your computer is already infected with browser hijackers, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate them.
