How to remove securesearch.me browser hijacker from Mac?

What is securesearch.me?

Securesearch.me is fake search engine that is promoted via browser hijacker. Typically, browser hijackers promote fake search engines by making certain modifications in browser settings. Also, they den to be designed to collect details related to user's web browsing activities. In this particular case a browser hijacker is designed to add the "Managed by your organization" feature to Chrome browsers as well. It is worthwhile to mention that in most cases users download and install browser hijackers unknowingly. Therefore, they are categorized as potentially unwanted applications (PUAs).

securesearch.me browser hijacker on a Mac computer

A typical browser hijacker promotes a fake search engine by changing browser settings such as the address of a default search engine, homepage and new tab to an address of a fake search engine. In this particular case it changes them to securesearch.me, a fake search engine that is designed to provide results generated by webcrawler.com, another dubious search engine that may be designed to include links to potentially malicious sites in its results. As a rule, changes that were made by installed browser hijacker cannot be undone as long as it is installed. Therefore, Securesearch.me can be removed from browser settings only when a browser hijacker that is designed to promote it is no longer installed. Another reason not to have apps of this type installed is that they often are designed to collect information like user's IP addresses, geolocations, entered search queries, addresses of visited pages, etc. In some cases they are designed to collect personal, sensitive details as well. What is worse, their developers can misuse collected data to generate revenue by selling it to third parties (potentially cyber criminals), or in some other ways. Therefore, users who have their browsers hijacked by such apps are at risk of becoming victims of identity theft, encountering problems related to online privacy, browsing safety, or other issues.

Some more examples of fake search engines are search.validplatform.com, search.basicgeneration.com and cybersearch.xyz. As a rule, they appear in browser settings after installation of some browser hijacker, although, in some cases browser hijackers promote fake search engines without changing any settings. In one way or another, it is advised to use only legitimate search engines and never install any browser hijackers.

How did securesearch.me install on my computer?

One of the popular ways to distribute PUAs is to integrate/include them in download and/or installation setups of other programs as extra offers. This distribution method is known as "bundling". As a rule, included PUAs can be declined in setup's "Custom", "Advanced", or other settings. When people download and/or install programs without checking and changing any those settings, they often agree with offers to download and/or install included apps as well. In some cases unwanted downloads and/or installations can be caused by clicking deceptive ads that are designed to execute certain scripts.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

It is advised not to download files or programs through/from various unofficial pages, Peer-to-Peer networks like torrent clients, eMule, third party downloaders or other similar sources, tools. Third party installers should not be used as well. It is recommended to use only official websites and direct download links for that. Downloads and installations should not be completed without checking setups for settings like "Custom", "Advanced" and declining offers to download or install unwanted apps. Ads displayed on questionable pages related to gambling, adult dating, pornography, and other similar sites should not be clicked as well - they can be designed to open unreliable websites or cause unwanted downloads, installations. Any unwanted, suspicious apps (extensions, plug-ins or add-ons) that are already installed on a browser should be removed from it. The same applies to programs of this kind that are installed on the operating system too. If your computer is already infected with browser hijackers, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate them.
