How to remove the Omyweb browser hijacker and the redirects it causes
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Omyweb?
Omyweb is rogue software, which is classified as a browser hijacker. Typically, browser hijackers operate by making changes to browser settings to promote bogus search engines, however, Omyweb does not actually modify browsers to promote its associated fake search engine (keysearchs.com).
Like most examples of this type of software, Omyweb collects browsing-related information. Due to the dubious techniques employed to distribute browser hijackers, they are also categorized as Potentially Unwanted Applications (PUAs).
Browser hijackers primarily target popular browsers with large user bases. They assign the addresses of bogus search engines as the homepage, default search engine and new tab/window URLs. Therefore, each search query typed into the URL bar and new browser tab/window opened redirects to the address of the promoted search engine.
In some cases, Omyweb also modifies browser settings in the previously detailed manner, and the aforementioned actions likewise cause redirects to keysearchs.com. Fake search engines are rarely able to provide search results, and so they redirect or cause redirection chains leading to legitimate search engines.
The keysearchs.com web searcher is no exception to this, yet where it redirects to is determined by users' geolocations. At the time of research, keysearchs.com redirected straight to the Google (google.com) search engine or caused a redirection chain consisting of my-search.com, search-checker.com, and concluding with the Bing (bing.com) search engine.
Furthermore, browser hijackers can reassign any changes users try to make to their browsers and/or restrict/deny access to the browser settings outright. They ensure persistence in this fashion, and thus it is impossible to recover a hijacked browser without eliminating the software affecting it.
Furthermore, Omyweb has data tracking capabilities. It can monitor browsing activity (visited URLs, viewed web pages, searched queries, etc.) and collect personal information extracted from it (IP addresses, geolocations and other details). The gathered data is then shared with and/or sold to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals).
In summary, the presence of data-tracking content on devices can result in serious privacy issues, financial loss and even identity theft. To protect device integrity and user privacy, all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins must be removed without delay.

Emojis Toolbar, BestConverterSearch and FileConverterSearches are some examples of other browser hijackers. They may seem normal and harmless, and users are enticed into download/installation with offers of various "useful" functionality, however, the advertised functions are rarely operational.
The only purpose of these unwanted apps is to generate revenue for the developers. Rather than delivering any real value, PUAs can hijack browsers, force-open untrusted and malicious websites, run intrusive advertisement campaigns (adware), collect sensitive and personally identifiable information.
How did Omyweb install on my computer?
PUAs are often downloaded/installed together with other products. This deceptive marketing technique of pre-packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions is called "bundling".
By rushing through download/installation of software (e.g. ignoring terms, skipping steps and sections, using "Quick/Express" settings, etc.) many users risk unintentionally allowing bundled content into their devices. Intrusive advertisements proliferate PUAs as well. When clicked, the ads can execute scripts to download/install these applications without users' permission.
Some PUAs (including Omyweb) have "official" download web pages from which they can be downloaded.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
You are advised to research all software before download/installation. Use only official and verified download channels. Unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks (BitTorrent, Gnutella, eMule), and other third party downloaders commonly offer harmful and bundled content, and are therefore untrusted and should be avoided.
When downloading/installing, read the terms, study all possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out of additional apps, tools, features, and so on. Intrusive advertisements typically seem legitimate, however, they can redirect to dubious and malicious sites (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, and many others).
If you encounter ads or redirects of this kind, inspect the system and remove all dubious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately. If your computer is already infected with Omyweb, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
