GillCom browser hijacker removal instructions
What is GillCom?
GillCom is a piece of rogue software, categorized as a browser hijacker. It operates by making changes to browser settings in order to promote fxsmash.xyz - an illegitimate search engine. In addition, GillCom has data tracking abilities that are employed to spy on users' browsing habits. Due to the questionable methods used to distribute browser hijackers, they are also deemed to be PUAs (Potentially Unwanted Applications).
Browser hijackers primarily target popular browsers with large user bases. They reassign browsers' homepage, default search engine and new tab/window URLs - to the addresses of illegitimate web searchers. GillCom makes these modifications to browsers as well. Hence, with this browser hijacker installed: new browser tabs/windows opened and search queries typed into the URL bar - redirect to fxsmash.xyz. Fake search engines are seldom able to provide search results, so they tend to redirect to (or cause redirection chains ending with) Google, Yahoo, Bing and other genuine ones. Even if illegitimate web searchers can generate search results, they are usually inaccurate and/or promote untrustworthy/malicious websites. In case of fxsmash.xyz, it redirects to the websearches.club illegitimate search engine. Furthermore, browser hijackers can undo any changes users attempt to make to their browsers and/or limit/deny access to the browsers' settings outright. Therefore, recovering a hijacked browser is impossible without eliminating the software affecting it. What is more, most browser hijackers can track data and GillCom is not an exception to this. It can monitor browsing activity (URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries typed, etc.) and gather personal information extracted from it (IP addresses, geolocations and other details). In summary, presence of data-tracking content on devices can lead to serious privacy issues, financial losses and even identity theft. To ensure device and user safety, all dubious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins must be removed immediately upon detection.

IncognitoSearchNet, Nusmash, ProStreamsSearch and Dosearch Lite are some examples of other browser hijackers. They appear ordinary and harmless. Additionally, browser hijackers offer a wide variety of "handy" functionalities. However, the advertised functions are rarely operational. This applies to practically all PUAs. The only purpose of unwanted apps is to generate profit for the developers. Therefore, instead of delivering on any promises, PUAs can hijack browsers, force-open unreliable and dangerous webpages, run intrusive advertisement campaigns (adware), collect vulnerable and personally identifiable information.
How did GillCom install on my computer?
Select PUAs (e.g. GillCom) have "official" download sites. These applications are also distributed via download/installation setups of other software. This false marketing technique of packing regular products with unwanted or malicious additions - is termed "bundling". Rushed download/installation processes (e.g. ignored terms, skipped steps and sections, used "Easy/Express" settings, etc.) increase the risk of inadvertently allowing bundled content into the system. Intrusive advertisements proliferate these applications as well. Once clicked on, the adverts can execute scripts to stealthily download/install PUAs.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
It is important to research products before download/installation and/or purchase. All downloads must be done from official and verified sources. Since dubious channels, e.g. unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks (e.g. BitTorrent, eMule, Gnutella, etc.) and other third party downloaders - can offer harmful and/or bundled content. Download and installation processes must be treated with caution; that includes - reading terms, studying all available options, using the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opting-out from supplementary apps, tools, features, etc. Intrusive advertisements appear legitimate, however they redirect to unreliable and questionable webpages (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, and so on). In case of encounters with ads and/or redirects of this kind, the system must be checked and all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins detected - immediately removed from it. If your computer is already infected with GillCom, we recommend running a scan with Malwarebytes for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
