How to remove apps that promote pages like peachlandcn[.]com?

What is peachlandcn[.]com?

There are many websites like peachlandcn[.]com. What most of them have in common is that they display some fake virus or other notification saying that a device is (or may be) infected or there is some other problem and suggest to remove viruses, protect devices with some potentially unwanted application (PUAs) that can be downloaded via provided link. Simply said, websites like peachlandcn[.]com promote applications using deceptive methods. Such pages should be ignored and reported.

peachlandcn[.]com scam

At the current moment there are no less than four variants of the peachlandcn[.]com page that are designed to promote a VPN client. Research shows that two of the known peachlandcn[.]com variants offer to download VPN client called Harbor VPN - Secure Connection. It is known that this application can be downloaded from Apple App Store, therefore, it is very likely that this app is legitimate. Although, it does not make the peachlandcn[.]com page any more trustworthy. It is common for such pages to be designed to trick unsuspecting visitors into downloading browser hijackers, adware apps, or potentially unwanted apps of other types. Moreover, it is possible that some of them may be used to distribute malicious apps. Therefore, applications should be downloaded only from legitimate sources/official pages.

Usually users do not visit pages like peachlandcn[.]com intentionally. They get opened via deceptive ads, other untrustworthy sites or by installed PUAs. It is worthwhile to mention that PUAs tend to be designed to generate ads and/or collect various data. Some examples of types of ads that they generate are coupons, banners, surveys, pop-up ads. Examples of data that PUAs collect are IP addresses, entered search queries, addresses of visited pages, geolocations. Although, in some cases PUAs gather not only browsing-related information but also sensitive, personal data.

Peachlandcn[.]com is similar to moderation-support[.]network, appleconnect.safellk[.]com and global-support[.]space and many other deceptive pages. If such pages get opened by a device or a browser regularly, then it is likely that it has some potentially unwanted application installed on it. Typically, users download and install such apps unknowingly.

How did potentially unwanted applications install on my computer?

It is common that users download and/or install PUAs together with programs that have those apps included in their download and/or installation setups as additional offers. More precisely, when users finish downloads and/or installations without changing "Advanced", "Custom" (or other) settings or unticking certain checkboxes (without declining unwanted offers). It is worthwhile to mention that this distribution method is called "bundling". Sometimes users cause unwanted downloads and/or installations by clicking deceptive ads that are designed to run certain scripts.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

Unofficial pages, Peer-to-Peer networks like eMule. torrent clients, third party downloaders, installers, etc., should not be used neither to download or install any apps. Apps should be downloaded only from official websites and via direct links. Download and/or installation setups that include settings like "Custom", "Advanced" should be checked for unwanted offers. Advertisements on shady pages should not be clicked. Quite often those ads are designed to open untrustworthy websites, or even download and/or installations as well. Therefore, such ads should not be clicked. If there are any unwanted, suspicious extensions, add-ons and plug-ins installed on a browser, then they should be removed. Apps that are installed on the operating system should be uninstalled too. If your computer is already infected with PUAs, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate them.
