How to remove LogarithmicBalance adware from Mac?
What is LogarithmicBalance?
LogarithmicBalance is an adware-type application with browser hijacker qualities. Following successful installation, this app runs intrusive advertisement campaigns and modifies browsers - in order to promote fake search engines. Additionally, most adwares and browser hijackers spy on users' browsing activity. Due to the questionable methods used to distribute LogarithmicBalance, it is also classified as a PUA (Potentially Unwanted Application).
Adware enables the placement of banners, surveys, pop-ups, coupons and other intrusive ads - typically, on any visited website. These adverts severely diminish the browsing experience; they slow down the browsing speed and overlay page content. Furthermore, intrusive advertisements pose a threat to device/user safety. Since upon being clicked, the adverts redirect to various unreliable/malicious sites and some can even stealthily download/install software (e.g. PUAs).
Browser hijackers reassign browsers' homepage, default search engine and new tab/window URLs - to the addresses of fake web searchers. Hence, with a browser hijacker installed: new browser tabs/windows opened and search queries typed into the URL bar - redirect to the promoted address. Illegitimate search engines are seldom able to provide search results, so they tend to redirect (or cause redirection chains leading) to Google, Bing, Yahoo and other genuine ones. Furthermore, browser hijackers ensure persistence by restricting/denying access to browser settings and/or undoing any permitted changes made. Therefore, recovering an affected browser is impossible without removing the software hijacking it.
Most PUAs (adware and browser hijackers included) have data tracking abilities. They can monitor browsing activity (visited URLs, viewed pages, searched queries, etc.) and gather personal information extracted from it (IP addresses, geolocations and other details). This sensitive data is then monetized by being shared with and/or sold to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals), likewise intent on misusing it for profit. In summary, presence of unwanted apps on devices can result in system infections, serious privacy issues, financial losses and even identity theft. To ensure device integrity and user privacy, all dubious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins must be eliminated immediately upon detection.

GenerationUpdater, DigitalRecord, DigitalEngine, WizardUpdate and DLVPlayer are some examples of other applications within the adware classification. They usually appear legitimate and offer a broad range of "useful" functionalities. However, the features rarely work as promised and in most cases - they do not work at all. In fact, this is true of nearly all PUAs. Functionality and user safety are irrelevant, as the only goal of unwanted software is to generate revenue for the developers. PUAs are designed to deliver intrusive advert campaigns, hijack browsers, cause redirects and collect vulnerable data.
How did LogarithmicBalance install on my computer?
PUAs can be downloaded/installed alongside other products. This deceptive marketing technique of packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions - is called "bundling". Rushed download/installation processes (e.g. ignored terms, skipped steps and sections, used "Easy/Express" settings, etc.) increase the risk of inadvertently allowing bundled content into the system. Intrusive ads proliferate PUAs as well; once clicked on, they can execute scripts to make downloads/installations without user consent. Some PUAs have "official" promotional sites, from which they can be downloaded.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
It is advised to research products to verify their legitimacy, before download/installation and/or purchase. Only official and trustworthy download channels must be used. Since dubious download sources, like: unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks and other third party downloaders - often offer harmful and/or bundled content. When downloading/installing, it is recommended to read terms, explore all available options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out from additional apps, tools, features, etc. It is just as important to exercise caution when browsing. Intrusive adverts appear ordinary and harmless, however they redirect to highly questionable webpages (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, and so on). In case of encounters with ads and/or redirects of this type, the system must be inspected and all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins detected - removed immediately from it. If your computer is already infected with LogarithmicBalance, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
