How to remove MicroClick from Mac?

What is MicroClick?

MicroClick functions both as adware and a browser hijacker: it is designed to make certain changes in the browser's settings and display advertisements. It is likely that this app is designed to gather browsing-related or other information as well. It is common that users download and install apps like MicroClick inadvertently. Therefore, such apps are categorized as potentially unwanted applications (PUAs).

MicroClick adware

Apps like MicroClick are designed to display banners, coupons, pop-up ads, surveys, or other ads. If clicked, they could open untrustworthy websites or even cause download or even installation of unwanted software by executing certain scripts. Furthermore, this MicroClick changes the browser's settings (promotes a fake search engine). More precisely, it changes the address of a homepage, default search engine, and new tab to a fake search engine's address. As a rule, users can undo the changes that were made by a browser hijacker only after uninstalling it.

One more issue with apps like MicroClick is that they can be designed to gather geolocations, addresses of visited pages, entered search queries, IP addresses (or other browsing data), and even sensitive details. Furthermore, their developers could monetize gathered data. For example, they could sell it to third parties (potentially cybercriminals). Therefore, adware users are at risk of encountering issues related to browsing safety, privacy, or even becoming victims of identity theft.

More adware examples are ProcesserLog, InitialDevice, and ProductUpgrade. Most of them are designed only to generate revenue for their developers by displaying various advertisements and/or in other ways (e.g., by gathering data, promoting fake search engines). Either way, most adware is useless to its users and can cause certain problems.

How did MicroClick install on my computer?

It is common that PUAs are distributed by bundling them together with other programs. In such cases, developers include PUAs in download, installation setups as additional offers. Offers to download or install unwanted apps usually can be declined using "Advanced", "Custom", or other settings, or checkboxes before finishing downloads and installations. Users agree with wit unwanted offers when they leave those settings unchanged. Also, unwanted downloads and installations can be caused unknowingly by clicking deceptive ads that are designed to execute certain scripts.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

Apps should be downloaded from official websites (and via direct links). Other sources, tools like third party downloaders, Peer-to-Peer networks (like torrent clients, eMule), unofficial pages, etc., and third party installers should be used. Downloads, installations should not be finished without checking setup's "Custom", "Advanced" or other settings for unwanted offers. Ads on pages related to gambling, pornography, adult dating, and other questionable pages should not be clicked as well. They could open potentially malicious pages or cause unwanted downloads, installations. If there are any unwanted or suspicious add-ons, plug-ins, or extensions installed on a browser or programs of this kind installed on the operating system, they should be removed. If your computer is already infected with MicroClick, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
