How to remove the Bright Tab browser hijacker

Also Known As: Bright Tab redirect
Damage level: Medium

What is Bright Tab?

Bright Tab is a browser hijacker promoting the tailsearch.com fake search engine. Typically, software within this category promotes fake search engines by modifying browser settings, however, Bright Tab does not always operate in this way (see below).

Additionally, Bright Tab has data tracking capabilities, which are used to collect browsing-related information. Since most users download/install browser hijackers inadvertently, they are also classified as Potentially Unwanted Applications (PUAs).

Bright Tab browser hijacker asking to be permitted to track data

Browser hijackers usually operate by assigning bogus web search engine addresses (including tailsearch.com) as the default search engine, homepage, and new tab/window URLs. Therefore, new browser tabs/windows opened and search queries typed into the URL bar redirect to the promoted address.

As mentioned, Bright Tab does not necessarily make the aforementioned alterations to browsers. Fake search engines are seldom able to provide search results, and so they tend to redirect to (or cause redirection chains ending with) legitimate sites. This applies to tailsearch.com as well. At the time of research, this web searcher redirected straight to the Google (google.com) search engine or via my-search.com and search-checker.com to the Bing (bing.com) search engine.

Browser hijackers can also ensure persistence, thereby complicating their removal. This software can undo any changes users attempt to make to their browsers. Alternatively, browser hijackers can restrict/deny access to the browser settings outright. Therefore, recovering a hijacked browser is impossible without eliminating the software affecting it.

Bright Tab can track data, which is typical of browser hijackers. They monitor browsing activity (URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries typed, etc.) and gather vulnerable data extracted from it (IP addresses, geolocations, and even personally identifiable information). The collected data is then shared with and/or sold to third-parties, likewise intent on misusing it for profit.

In summary, data-tracking software can cause serious privacy issues, financial loss, and lead to identity theft. To protect device integrity and user safety, it is crucial to remove all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately upon detection.

Quick RecipesHDSportsSearch, and Spark Tab are some examples of browser hijackers. They appear ordinary and harmless. This software also offers a wide variety of "useful" functionalities, ranging from file format conversion to easy access to specific online content.

Regardless of how useful the features may sound, they rarely work. This is true of most PUAs. These unwanted apps only aim to generate revenue for the developers. PUAs simply hijack browsers, cause redirects, run intrusive advertisement campaigns (adware), and collect sensitive data.

How did Bright Tab install on my computer?

PUAs are distributed via download/installation set-ups of other products. This deceptive marketing tactic of packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions is called "bundling".

Rushing download/installation processes (e.g. ignoring terms, skipping steps and settings, etc.) increases the risk of inadvertently allowing bundled content into the system.

Some PUAs (including Bright Tab) have "official" download sites. Intrusive advertisements proliferate these applications as well. Once clicked, they can execute scripts to download/install PUAs without users' consent.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

Download software and files from official websites and via direct links. It is not safe to use torrent clients, eMule (or other Peer-to-Peer networks), third party downloaders, unofficial websites or other sources of this kind.

Avoid third party installers. Check "Advanced", "Custom" and other settings, and decline offers to download or install unwanted software. Do not click ads that are displayed on dubious websites, since they can open other untrusted websites or even cause unwanted downloads and installations.

Remove any unwanted, suspicious applications (extensions, add-ons, and plug-ins) that are installed on the browser. The same should be applied to programs of this kind that are installed on the operating system.

Regularly scan your computer with reputable antivirus or anti-spyware software and keep this software up to date.

If your computer is already infected with Bright Tab, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
