How to remove EssentialType adware from Mac?

What is EssentialType?

EssentialType is an adware-type app with browser hijacker qualities. It runs intrusive advertisement campaigns (delivers various ads) and promotes fake search engines by making alterations to browser settings. Additionally, software of this type usually spies on users' browsing habits. Due to the questionable techniques used to distribute EssentialType, it is also categorized as a PUA (Potentially Unwanted Application).

Adware delivers pop-ups, banners, coupons, surveys, full-page, and other intrusive adverts. They overlay website content and slow down the browsing speed, thereby severely crippling the browsing experience. Furthermore, these ads promote misleading, untrustworthy, rogue, deceptive/scam, and malicious sites. Some intrusive advertisements can even be triggered (by being clicked on) to execute scripts designed to stealthily download/install software (e.g., PUAs).

Browser hijackers assign fake web searcher addresses as browsers' homepage, new tab/window, and default search engine URLs. Hence, every new browser tab/window opened and search query typed into the URL bar - redirect to the promoted address. Fake search engines rarely can provide search results. These web searchers tend to redirect to (or cause redirection chains ending with) Google, Bing, Yahoo, and other legitimate search engines. Restoring an affected browser is impossible without eliminating the software hijacking it, since browser hijackers can restrict/deny access to the browser settings and/or undo any permitted changes made.

What is more, most PUAs have data tracking abilities. Information of interest includes: URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries typed, IP (Internet Protocol) addresses, geolocations, and even personally identifiable details. The collected data is then monetized by being shared with and/or sold to third-parties (potentially, cyber criminals). To summarize, presence of unwanted apps on devices - can result in system infections, severe privacy issues, financial losses, and identity theft. Therefore, it is highly recommended to remove all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins without delay.

VPNrecommendedConfigTypeDeskProduct - are a couple examples of applications within the adware classification. They appear useful and offer various functionalities. However, the advertised features seldom work as promised, and in most cases - they do not work at all. In fact, this is true of nearly all PUAs. The only purpose of unwanted software is to generate revenue for the developers. Therefore, instead of delivering on any promises, PUAs can run intrusive advert campaigns, hijack browsers, cause redirects, and gather vulnerable and private data.

How did EssentialType install on my computer?

PUAs can be downloaded/installed together with other products. This false marketing method of packing ordinary software with unwanted or malicious additions - is named "bundling". Rushed downloads/installations (e.g., skipped steps and sections, used "Quick/Express" settings, etc.) increase the risk of inadvertently allowing bundled content into the device. Intrusive advertisements are employed to spread PUAs as well. Once clicked on, the ads can execute scripts to download/install these applications without user permission. Select PUAs have "official" download webpages as well.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

It is advised to research software prior to download/installation and/or purchase. All downloads should be done only from official and verified sources. Since untrustworthy download channels, e.g., unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks, and other third-party downloaders - often offer harmful and/or bundled content. Download and installation processes must be approached with caution. Therefore, it is important to read terms, study possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and decline downloading/installing supplementary apps, tools, functions, and other additions. Intrusive adverts appear ordinary and innocuous; however, they redirect to unreliable and questionable sites (e.g., pornography, gambling, adult-dating, etc.). In case of encounters with ads and/or redirects of this type, the device must be checked and all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins detected - immediately removed from it. If your computer is already infected with EssentialType, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
