How to remove SwiftSearch browser hijacker and the redirects it causes

Also Known As: swiftsearch.com redirect
Damage level: Medium

What is SwiftSearch?

While inspecting deceptive promotional sites, our researchers found the SwiftSearch browser extension. After analyzing SwiftSearch, we determined that it operates as a browser hijacker. The extension changes browser settings to promote the swiftsearch.com fake search engine. Additionally, SwiftSearch spies on users' browsing activity.

swiftsearch.com browser hijacker

SwiftSearch browser hijacker overview

On our test machine, SwiftSearch set swiftsearch.com as the browser's default search engine, new tab/window, and homepage URLs. Therefore, new browser tabs/windows opened and web searchers performed via the URL bar - resulted in a redirect to the swiftsearch.com website.

Fake search engines usually cannot provide search results, so they lead to genuine ones. This applies to swiftsearch.com as well; we observed it redirecting to Google (google.com) and Bing (bing.com). However, swiftsearch.com might redirect elsewhere as that can depend on user geolocation or other factors.

SwiftSearch also uses persistence-ensuring techniques to prevent users from recovering their browsers. Furthermore, SwiftSearch has data tracking abilities.

Browser hijackers typically gather visited URLs, viewed pages, searched queries, personally identifiable details, usernames/passwords, credit card numbers, etc. The collected information can be monetized through sale to third-parties (potentially, cyber criminals).

To summarize, the presence of browser-hijacking software like SwiftSearch on devices can lead to serious privacy issues, financial losses, and even identity theft.

Browser hijacker examples

We have analyzed thousands of browser hijackers; To Go WebVideoSearches, and Keep Secure Search are merely a couple of examples. This software typically appears legitimate and offers various functionalities. However, the advertised functions rarely work as promised, and in most cases - they are nonoperational.

How did SwiftSearch install on my computer?

SwiftSearch has an "official" promotional webpage from which we acquired it. In addition to such pages, browser hijackers are endorsed through scam websites. Most users enter dubious software-promoting sites via redirects caused by spam browser notifications, webpages using rogue advertising networks, mistyped URLs, intrusive ads, or installed adware.

Furthermore, browser-hijacking software is proliferated by intrusive advertisements. Once clicked on, some of these adverts can execute scripts to make downloads/installations without user consent.

"Bundling" - packing regular program installers with unwanted/malicious additions - is also used to distribute browser hijackers. Download from untrustworthy channels (e.g., freeware and third-party sites, P2P sharing networks, etc.) and rushed installations increase the risk of allowing bundled content into the system.

How to avoid installation of browser hijackers?

We strongly recommend researching software and downloading it from official and verified sources. When installing, we advise reading terms, exploring available options, using the "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opting-out of all supplements.

Another recommendation is exercising caution when browsing - as illegitimate and malicious content typically looks harmless. For example, intrusive ads appear legitimate and innocuous, yet they redirect to highly questionable websites (e.g., adult-dating, gambling, pornography, etc.).

If you experience such advertisements and/or redirects, check the system and immediately remove all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with SwiftSearch, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
