Reyptson ransomware removal instructions

What is Reyptson?

Reyptson is a ransomware-type virus discovered by malware security researcher, xXToffeeXx. Once infiltrated, Reyptson encrypts stored data using AES-128 cryptography. In doing so, this ransomware appends filenames with the ".REYPTSON" extension (for example, "sample.jpg" is renamed to "sample.jpg.REYPTSON"). Reyptson then creates a text file ("Como_Recuperar_Tus_Ficheros.txt"), places it in each folder containing encrypted files, and opens a pop-up window.

The pop-up and text file contain a ransom-demand message in Spanish stating that files are encrypted using the AES-128 algorithm and that victims must pay a ransom to restore them. AES-128 is a symmetric cryptography and, thus, a unique key is generated to encrypt and decrypt files. Developers store this key on a remote server and victims are encouraged to pay a ransom of the equivalent of $200 in Bitcoins to receive it. It is also stated that the ransom must be paid within 72 hours, otherwise the cost will increase to $500. To pay the ransom, victims must follow instructions provided on Reyptson's website. Bear in mind, however, that cyber criminals should never be trusted. Research shows that these people often ignore victims once payments are submitted. There is a high probability that you will be scammed and paying will not deliver any positive result - you will you lose your money and support cyber criminals' malicious businesses. Therefore, never attempt to contact these people or pay any ransom. Unfortunately, there are no tools capable of restoring files encrypted by Reyptson. The only solution is to restore your files/system from a backup.

Reyptson is virtually identical to BLACKOUT, Striked, Ranrans, Nemucod, and dozens of other ransomware-type viruses. As with Reyptson, these malware infection also encrypt stored data and make ransom demands. There are just two major differences: 1) size of ransom, and; 2) type of encryption algorithm used. These viruses usually employ algorithms that generate unique decryption keys (for example, RSA, AES). Therefore, restoring files without cyber criminals' involvement (not recommended) is mostly impossible.

How did ransomware infect my computer?

To proliferate ransomware, cyber criminals often use spam emails (infectious attachments), peer-to-peer (P2P) networks and other unofficial software download sources (torrents, freeware download websites, free file hosting websites, etc.), fake software updaters, and trojans. Spam emails often contain malicious attachments (for example, JavaScript files, MS Office documents, etc.) designed to download/install the malware. Unofficial download sources often proliferate malware by presenting it as legitimate software. Fake updaters exploit old software bugs/flaws to infect the system.

How to protect yourself from ransomware infections?

To prevent ransomware-type infections, be very cautious when browsing the Internet. Firstly, never open files received from suspicious emails or download software from unofficial sources. Secondly, keep your installed applications up-to-date and use a legitimate anti-virus/anti-spyware suite. Note, however, that criminals proliferate malware via fake updaters. Therefore, using third party tools to update software is very risky.

7. After restoring your computer to a previous date, download and scan your PC with recommended malware removal software to eliminate any remaining Reyptson ransomware files.

To restore individual files encrypted by this ransomware, try using Windows Previous Versions feature. This method is only effective if the System Restore function was enabled on an infected operating system. Note that some variants of Reyptson are known to remove Shadow Volume Copies of the files, so this method may not work on all computers.

To restore a file, right-click over it, go into Properties, and select the Previous Versions tab. If the relevant file has a Restore Point, select it and click the "Restore" button.

If you cannot start your computer in Safe Mode with Networking (or with Command Prompt), boot your computer using a rescue disk. Some variants of ransomware disable Safe Mode making its removal complicated. For this step, you require access to another computer.

To regain control of the files encrypted by Reyptson, you can also try using a program called Shadow Explorer. More information on how to use this program is available here.

To protect your computer from file encryption ransomware such as this, use reputable antivirus and anti-spyware programs. As an extra protection method, you can use programs called HitmanPro.Alert and EasySync CryptoMonitor, which artificially implant group policy objects into the registry to block rogue programs such as Reyptson ransomware.

HitmanPro.Alert CryptoGuard - detects encryption of files and neutralises any attempts without need for user-intervention:
