Buran ransomware removal instructions

What is Buran?

First discovered by malware research nao_sec, Buran is high-risk ransomware distributed using Rig Exploit Kit. This is a new variant of another ransomware infection called Vega. After successfully infiltrating the system, Buran encrypts most stored files and appends filenames with the victim's unique ID (e.g., "sample.jpg" might be renamed to a filename such as "sample.jpg.48E7EE9F-3B50-B177-0614-DF09178EE722"). Following successful encryption, Buran generates a text file ("!!! YOUR FILES ARE ENCRYPTED !!!.TXT") and stores it on the desktop. The file contains a ransom-demand message.

The message states that data is encrypted and that a unique decryption key is necessary to restore it. Unfortunately, this information is accurate. The type of cryptography algorithm used by Buran is currently unknown, however, a unique decryption key is generated individually for each victim. Victims cannot access their keys, as they are stored on a remote server controlled by cyber criminals. To receive the keys (or rather decryption tools with keys embedded within), users must pay a ransom. The cost is not specified - these details are provided via email, however, the size of ransom usually fluctuates between $500 and $1500 in Bitcoins, Monero, Ethereum, DASH or another cryptocurrency. Regardless of the cost, do not pay. Research shows that cyber criminals often ignore victims after they submit payments. Therefore, paying gives no positive result and users are scammed. Unfortunately, there are no tools capable of cracking Buran encryption and restoring data free of charge. The only solution is to restore everything from a backup, if one has been created.

Buran decrypt instructions

There are dozens of ransomware infections that share similarities with Buran. The list of examples includes (but is not limited to) Luboversova148DavdaDodger, and Stone. These infections are developed by different cyber criminals, however, their behavior is virtually identical - all encrypt data and make ransom demands. The only major differences are size of ransom and type of encryption algorithm used. Unfortunately, ransomware infections often use RSA, AES, and other cryptographies that generate unique decryption keys. In such cases, manual decryption without involvement of the developers (not recommended) is impossible, unless the virus is still in development or has certain bugs/flaws. Ransomware such as Buran presents a strong case for maintaining regular backups, however, store them on a remote server or unplugged storage device, since locally stored backups are encrypted together with regular data. Additionally, we advise you to have multiple backup copies stored in different locations, since there is always the chance that servers/hardware can be damaged.

How did ransomware infect my computer?

As mentioned above, Buran is proliferated using Rig Exploit Kit, however, these ransomware infections are also often spread using spam email campaigns, third party software download sources, fake software updaters/cracks, and trojans. Criminals use spam campaigns to send hundreds of thousands of deceptive emails consisting of malicious attachments (link and/or files), and deceptive messages encouraging recipients to open them. Criminals often present these attachments as important documents, such as receipts, invoices, bills, and similar. These are attempts to give the impression of legitimacy and increase the chance of tricking recipients into opening the files. Unofficial download sources (peer-to-peer [P2P] networks, free file hosting websites, freeware download sites, etc.) are also used in a similar manner. Criminals use these sources to proliferate malware by presenting malicious executables as legitimate software. In this way, users are tricked into manual download/installation of malware. Fake software updaters usually infect computers by exploiting old software bugs/flaws or simply downloading and installing malware rather than updates. The same applies to fake 'cracks'. Rather than enabling paid features, these tools inject malware into the system. Trojans are malicious applications that stealthily infiltrate computers to download/install additional malware.

How to protect yourself from ransomware infections?

The main reasons for computer infections are poor knowledge of these threats and careless behavior. The key to safety is caution. Therefore, pay close attention when browsing the Internet and downloading/installing/updating software. Handle all received email attachments with care. Files/links that are irrelevant or do not concern you should never be opened. The same applies to attachments received from suspicious/unrecognizable email addresses. Download your software from official sources only, using direct download links. Third party downloaders/installers should never be used. Keeping installed applications and operating systems up-to-date is also very important, however, this should be achieved only through implemented functions or tools provided by the official developers. Cracking installed applications is illegal - software piracy is a cyber crime and the risk of infection is extremely high. Never attempt to crack installed software. Have a reputable anti-virus/anti-spyware suite installed and running at all times, since these tools detect and eliminate malware before the system is harmed. If your computer is already infected with Buran, we recommend running a scan with Spyhunter for Windows to automatically eliminate this ransomware.

5. Select one of the available Restore Points and click "Next" (this will restore your computer system to an earlier time and date, prior to the Buran ransomware virus infiltrating your PC).

select a restore point

6. In the opened window, click "Yes".

run system restore

7. After restoring your computer to a previous date, download and scan your PC with recommended malware removal software to eliminate any remaining Buran ransomware files.

To restore individual files encrypted by this ransomware, try using Windows Previous Versions feature. This method is only effective if the System Restore function was enabled on an infected operating system. Note that some variants of Buran are known to remove Shadow Volume Copies of the files, so this method may not work on all computers.

To restore a file, right-click over it, go into Properties, and select the Previous Versions tab. If the relevant file has a Restore Point, select it and click the "Restore" button.

Restoring files encrypted by CryptoDefense

If you cannot start your computer in Safe Mode with Networking (or with Command Prompt), boot your computer using a rescue disk. Some variants of ransomware disable Safe Mode making its removal complicated. For this step, you require access to another computer.

To regain control of the files encrypted by Buran, you can also try using a program called Shadow Explorer. More information on how to use this program is available here.

To protect your computer from file encryption ransomware such as this, use reputable antivirus and anti-spyware programs. As an extra protection method, you can use programs called HitmanPro.Alert and EasySync CryptoMonitor, which artificially implant group policy objects into the registry to block rogue programs such as Buran ransomware.

Note that Windows 10 Fall Creators Update includes "Controlled Folder Access" feature that blocks ransomware attempts to encrypt your files. By default this feature automatically protects files stored in Documents, Pictures, Videos, Music, Favorites as well as Desktop folders.

Controll Folder Access

Windows 10 users should install this update to protect their data from ransomware attacks. Here's more information on how to get this update and add additional protection layer from ransomware infections.
