How to remove "Fastsearchday" from Mac?

What is "Fastsearchday"?

Fastsearchday is a scam website that is used to advertise the Smart Mac Booster application. This page promotes it using deception, it displays fake notification stating that a computer is infected with viruses that can be removed with the aforementioned program. As a rule, people do not visit websites of this kind intentionally. These pages usually are opened by installed potentially unwanted applications (PUAs).

Fastsearchday scam

At first this website displays a pop-up window, according to it a user has visited some malicious website which infected Mac with virus. When this pop-up is closed, this scam website displays details about the device (computer) and encourages visitors to scan it for viruses by clicking the "Scan Now" button". If clicked, it starts a fake scan which detects a virus named "Bankworm". It also displays a "REMOVE VIRUS NOW" button which supposed to download the Advanced Mac Cleaner app. However, when clicked, it opens a page that is used to promote Smart Mac Booster. One way or another, both of them should not be trusted. It is not recommended to trust any app that is promoted through questionable, deceptive websites. The best option is to ignore websites of this type by simply closing them.

Apps (PUAs) that often are responsible for forcing browsers to open untrustworthy websites usually are designed to display ads and collect various information as well. They show coupons, banners, surveys, pop-ups and other ads that should not be clicked. When clicked, they open untrustworthy websites or execute scripts that cause downloads or even installations of various potentially unwanted applications. Additionally, PUAs collect information about their users too. For example, IP addresses, geolocations, URLs of opened pages, entered search queries and so on. Their developers share all this data with third parties who misuse it to generate revenue. It is possible that some of the included parties might be cyber criminals.

The Internet is full of scam pages that are similar to this one, for example, apple.com-scan-mac[.]live, apple.com-shield[.]live and apple.com-monitor[.]live. Typically, all of these pages are designed to trick people into believing that their computers are infected and can be fixed with a certain application. Most PUAs are also very similar, they force people to visit unreliable pages, feed them with unwanted ads an gather data.

How did potentially unwanted applications install on my computer?

Typically, users cause unwanted downloads and installations by clicking intrusive, deceptive ads or when software developers bundle unwanted apps into download or installation setups of other software. This method is also known as "bundling". It is used to trick people into downloading and installing unwanted apps together with other programs. As a rule, information about included apps is hidden in "Custom", "Advanced", "Manual" and other settings of various setups. Unfortunately, not all people check them and by leaving them unchanged they usually allow for PUAs to be downloaded and installed too.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

Software should be downloaded from official websites and via direct download. Channels such as Peer-to-Peer networks (torrent clients, eMule and so on), unofficial websites, third party downloaders and other channels of this kind cannot be trusted. Same goes for third party installers. Furthermore, all installations should be performed properly. It is important to check all available setup's settings ("Advanced", Custom" and so on) and to deselect offers to download or install unwanted apps before completing the setup. Intrusive advertisements that are displayed on unofficial pages should not be clicked. They usually lead to potentially malicious websites. To stop a default browser from opening shady pages or showing unwanted ads, we recommend to uninstall all unknown extensions, add-ons or plug-ins that are installed on it. Additionally, if there are any unwanted programs installed on the operating system, they should be uninstalled too. If your computer is already infected with PUAs, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate them.
