How to remove search.becovi.com browser hijacker from Mac?

What is search.becovi.com?

Sharing many similarities with search.follysway.comsearch.schooldozer.comsearch.pitchofcase.com and countless others - search.becovi.com is a fake search engine. Typically, illegitimate web searchers are advertised as tools, designed to improve the browsing experience, provide fast searches, accurate search results and so on. Fake search engines like search.becovi.com are primarily promoted by browser hijackers. These rogue applications promote fake searching tools by making unauthorized changes to browsers and restricting/denying access to their settings. What is more, most browser hijackers have data tracking abilities, which they employ to spy on users' browsing activity.

search.becovi.com browser hijacker on a Mac computer

The most common targets of browser hijackers include Google Chrome, Safari, Mozilla Firefox and other popular browsers with large user bases. After successful infiltration, the hijackers assign the addresses of their fraudulent web searchers as browsers' homepage, default search engine and new tab/widow URLs. While these alterations may sound minor, they seriously affect browsing quality. For example, with a browser hijacker promoting search.becovi.com installed, every new tab/window opened and every single search query typed into the URL bar - redirect to search.becovi.com. Fake search engines are rarely capable of generating search results, so they redirect to (or cause redirection chains ending with) Google, search.yahoo.com, bing.com and other genuine ones. There are some that attempt to provide search results - this is the case with search.becovi.com. However, these illegitimate searchers are no less dubious, as their results tend to be inaccurate and they often endorse untrustworthy, even potentially malicious websites. Furthermore, without removal of the browser hijacker - recovering the affected browser is impossible. With the hijacker still present, any changes users make to their browsers can be automatically reset. It is possible that access to the relevant settings can be restricted, if not denied outright. As mentioned, it is not uncommon for browser hijackers to be able to track data. They can record browsing habits (URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, etc.) and collect users' personal information (IP addresses, geolocations and real-life details). It is highly likely that this gathered data will then be shared with third parties, seeking to misuse it for profit. In summary, presence of data-tracking content on devices can lead to severe privacy issues, financial losses and even identity theft. Therefore, it is recommended to remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately upon detection.

All fake search engines are practically identical. At first glance, they bear little to no difference from legitimate ones. However, while they are endorsed as "useful" tools, frequently with other features present (e.g. quick access to weather forecasts, maps/routes, a variety of media and so on) - illegitimate search engines usually are nonoperational. This extends to browser hijackers in general. They appear legitimate and offer various functions, which typically do not work. Functionality is irrelevant, when the only goal of fake search engines and browser hijackers - is to generate revenue for their developers. This is achieved through promotion of sale-based, untrustworthy/rogue, compromised, deceptive/scam and malicious webpages, as well as through collection of private data.

How did search.becovi.com install on my computer?

Fake search engines are promoted by browser hijackers. Due to the dubious proliferation methods of these apps, they are classified as PUAs (Potentially Unwanted Applications). Content in this class commonly spreads via download/install setups of other software. This deceptive marketing technique of pre-packing regular products with unwanted or malicious additions is called "bundling". By rushing through download/installation processes (e.g. by skipping steps and sections, using pre-set options, etc.) - users risk inadvertently allowing bundled content onto their systems, thereby endangering them with potential infiltrations and infections. Some PUAs have "official" download sites. When clicked on, intrusive advertisements can execute scripts to download/install PUAs without user permission.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

It is recommended to research products, before download/installation. All downloads should be done from official and verified sources. Untrustworthy download channels like: free file-hosting websites, P2P sharing networks (BitTorrent, eMule, Gnutella, etc.) and other third party downloaders - can offer deceptive and/or bundled software. When downloading/installing, it is important to read terms, study all possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out from supplementary apps, tools, features, etc. Intrusive ads usually look ordinary and innocuous, however they redirect to unreliable and questionable pages (e.g. pornography, adult-dating, gambling and so on). In case of encounters with advertisements/redirects of this kind, it is strongly advised to inspect the device and remove all suspect applications and/or browser extensions/plug-ins without delay. If your computer is already infected with browser hijackers, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate them.
