Nemty Special Edition ransomware removal instructions
What is Nemty Special Edition?
Nemty Special Edition is the name of a malicious program, it is a new variant of the NEMTY REVENUE 3.1 ransomware. Its discovery is credited to Anti-malware vigilante. It encrypts data and demands payment for the decryption. During the encryption process, all affected files are appended with an extension, consisting of the word "NEMTY", the underscore symbol and a random character string - ".NEMTY_[random_string]". For example, a file originally titled "1.jpg" would appear as something similar to "1.jpg.NEMTY_GAGK0TW"" - following encryption. After this process is complete, a ransom note - "NEMTY_[random_string]-DECRYPT.txt" is created. The same malicious executable file, used to proliferate Nemty Special Edition also injects Vidar trojan. One of the known distribution methods of this ransomware is via spam campaigns, mainly targeting South Korean users.
The ransom-demanding message ("NEMTY_[random_string]-DECRYPT.txt") informs victims that their data has been encrypted. The cryptographic algorithms used to encrypt the files are specified as AES-128-CTR and RSA-2048. The note states that there are no free ways to recover the data. To learn how to decrypt it, users are to establish contact with the cyber criminals behind the attack. Unfortunately, in many cases of ransomware infections, without interference of the individuals responsible - decryption is impossible. It may be, if the malware is still in development and/or has significant flaws. Whatever the case, it is expressly advised against communicating with and/or paying cyber criminals. Since often, despite meeting the ransom demands - victims do not receive the necessary tools/software to decrypt their files. Hence, they not only experience financial loss but their data also remains encrypted - essentially, worthless. To prevent Nemty Special Edition from further encryptions, it must be removed from the operating system. However, removal will not restore already affected files. The sole viable solution is recovering the data from a backup, if one was made before the infection and was stored in a different location.

Zemblax, .HaCk, 0day0 and Himynameisransom are a few examples of other ransomwares. These programs operate by encrypting files and demanding payment for the decryption. The main differences in-between them are: the cryptographic algorithm they use (symmetric or asymmetric) and the ransom size. The demanded sums typically range from three to four digits in USD. Cyber criminals usually prefer digital currencies (e.g. cryptocurrencies, pre-paid vouchers, etc.), due to transactions of them being difficult/impossible to trace. To avoid permanent data loss, it is highly recommended to keep backups in unplugged storage devices and/or remote servers (ideally, in several separate locations).

How to protect yourself from ransomware infections?
Suspicious and/or irrelevant emails should not be opened, especially ones received from suspect or unknown senders. Any attachments or links present in dubious mail - must never be opened, as doing so can result in a high-risk infection. It is recommended to only use official and verified download channels. Additionally, all products have to be activated and updated with functions/tools, provided by genuine developers. Illegal activation tools ("cracks") and third party updaters are advised against use, as they are often used to distribute malicious programs. To ensure device and user safety, it is paramount to have a dependable anti-virus/anti-spyware installed. This software must be kept up-to-date, used to perform regular system scans and to remove detected threats and issues. If your computer is already infected with Nemty Special Edition, we recommend running a scan with Malwarebytes for Windows to automatically eliminate this ransomware.
