Easy Finder browser hijacker removal instructions

What is Easy Finder?

Easy Finder is a typical browser hijacker - it promotes a fake search engine, the quicknewtab.com address by changing certain browser settings. It is common that browser hijackers are designed to collect various data as well. Most of the times users download and install browser hijackers unknowingly, therefore, Easy Finder and other apps of this type are categorized as potentially unwanted applications (PUAs).

quicknewtab.com browser hijacker

Easy Finder promotes quicknewtab.com by assigning it as an address of a default search engine, homepage and new tab so that users would visit it when they enter search queries into URL bar, open a browser, new tab. Since quicknewtab.com is a fake search engine, it is incapable of generating its own results. When used, it either redirects users to google.com or bing.com (via my-search.com, search-checker.com). In other words, this fake search engine provides results generated either by Google or Bing. Usually users cannot remove address of a fake search engine from browser settings without having to uninstall a certain browser hijacker first. In this case quicknewtab.com can be removed/changed to some other address only when Easy Finder is no longer installed on a browser. Another reason why any browser hijacker should not be installed is because apps of this type often are designed to collect various data. It is common that they target details like IP address, entered search queries, addresses of visited pages, geolocations, and/or other browsing data. However, they can be designed to collect personal, sensitive information as well. What is worse, collected data may be sold to third parties (potentially cyber criminals) or misuse to generate revenue in other ways. This may result in users having problems related to browsing safety, online privacy, or even becoming victims of identity theft. Therefore, neither Easy Finder or any other app of this type should be trusted/used.

To sum, a browser hijacker is a type of PUA that is designed only to generate revenue for its developers instead of being useful to its user. Moreover, it could be the reason behind various issues. It is worthwhile to mention that most browser hijackers are advertised as applications that supposed to include some features, improve browsing experience, etc. A couple of examples of other PUAs that are classified as browser hijackers are Comet Search, GiGi Browse, Search Online.

How did Easy Finder install on my computer?

Most of the times users download and/or install potentially unwanted apps unknowingly - together with other programs. To be more precise, PUAs are included in download or/and installation setups of other programs as extra offers. As a rule, included apps can be found and declined in their "Custom", "Advanced" or other settings. If users download and install programs without checking and changing the aforementioned settings (or unticking certain checkboxes), they download and/or install included apps too. This distribution method of potentially unwanted apps is known as "bundling". Another way to accidentally download and/or install PUAs is by clicking deceptive advertisements that are designed to execute certain scripts.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

Download and/or installation setups that include settings like "Custom", "Advanced" should be always checked for offers to download and/or install additional software. Such offers should be declined before completing download and/or installation processes. Programs and files should not be downloaded (or installed) through unofficial websites, third party downloaders (or installers), Peer-to-Peer networks (like torrent clients, eMule), etc. It should be achieved using official websites and direct links. Advertisements that are displayed on shady websites should not be clicked as well. It is common that those ads are designed either to open untrustworthy websites or cause downloads, installations of some unwanted applications. Any suspicious, unwanted extensions, add-ons or plug-ins that are already installed on a browser should be removed. The same should be done with programs of this kind that are installed on the operating system. If your computer is already infected with Easy Finder, we recommend running a scan with Malwarebytes for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
