How to uninstall ChangeParameter adware from the operating system

Also Known As: Ads by ChangeParameter
Type: Mac Virus
Damage level: Medium

What is ChangeParameter?

ChangeParameter is an adware-type application that possesses browser hijacker capabilities. It operates by running intrusive advertisement campaigns and making modifications to browser settings to promote fake search engines. ChangeParameter promotes z6airr.com on Safari browsers and search.locatorunit.com on Google Chrome.

Additionally, most adware-type apps and browser hijackers monitor users' browsing activity. Due to the dubious techniques used to proliferate ChangeParameter, it is also classified as a PUA (Potentially Unwanted Application). One of the methods used in ChangeParameter's distribution is via fake Adobe Flash Player updates.

Bogus software updaters/installers are employed to spread PUAs Trojans, ransomware, and other malware.

ChangeParameter adware

Adware enables the placement of pop-ups, banners, coupons, surveys and other intrusive advertisements, typically on any visited site. The delivered ads overlay web page content and reduce browsing speed. When clicked, they can redirect to various dubious/malicious websites and some can even stealthily download/install software (e.g. PUAs).

Browser hijackers assign the addresses of fake search engines as the homepage, default search engine and new tab/window URLs. ChangeParameter also makes these alterations to browsers to promote z6airr.com (Safari) and search.locatorunit.com (Google Chrome).

Therefore, with this browser hijacker installed, each new browser tab/window opened and search query typed into the URL bar redirects to the promoted address. Bogus search engines are seldom capable of providing search results, and so they redirect to Yahoo, Bing, Google and other genuine sites.

Furthermore, browser hijackers can undo any changes users attempt to make to their browsers, if they permit access to the browser settings in the first place. Furthermore, most PUAs (adware and browser hijackers) can track data.

They can record browsing activity (URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries typed, etc.) and collect personal information extracted from it (IP addresses, geolocations and other details). The gathered data is then shared with and/or sold to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals).

In summary, the presence of unwanted software can result in system infections, financial loss, serious privacy issues and even identity theft. To protect device and user safety, all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins must be removed without delay.

LogicalUpdateAnalyzerSource and PracticalSystem are some examples of other adware-type apps. They may seem legitimate and offer a wide variety of "useful" functionality, however, these features rarely work as promised and, in most cases, do not work at all.

In fact, this applies to most PUAs. The only purpose of these unwanted applications is to generate profit for the developers. PUAs run intrusive advertisement campaigns, modify browsers, cause redirects and collect private data.

How did ChangeParameter install on my computer?

PUAs are often downloaded/installed together with other products. This deceptive marketing technique of pre-packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions is called "bundling".

By rushing through download/installation of software (e.g. ignoring terms, skipping steps and sections, using "Quick/Express" settings, etc.) many users risk unintentionally allowing bundled content into their devices. Intrusive advertisements proliferate PUAs as well.

When clicked, the ads can execute scripts to download/install these applications without users' permission. Some PUAs have "official" download web pages from which they can be downloaded.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications

You are advised to research all software before download/installation. Use only official and verified download channels. Unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks (BitTorrent, Gnutella, eMule), and other third party downloaders commonly offer harmful and bundled content, and are therefore untrusted and should be avoided.

When downloading/installing, read the terms, study all possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out of additional apps, tools, features, and so on. Intrusive advertisements typically seem legitimate, however, they can redirect to dubious and malicious sites (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, and many others).

If you encounter ads or redirects of this kind, inspect the system and remove all dubious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately. If your computer is already infected with ChangeParameter, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
