How to uninstall applications that open crypt-protection.com?

Also Known As: crypt-protection.com pop-up
Type: Mac Virus
Damage level: Medium

What is crypt-protection[.]com?

Crypt-protection[.]com is a deceptive website designed to trick its visitors into downloading and installing a potentially unwanted application (PUA) that supposed to remove viruses that this website supposedly has detected on a device. Website like crypt-protection[.]com have to be ignored - virus notifications (or other messages) that they display are fake.

It is worthwhile to mention that users do not visit pages like crypt-protection[.]com intentionally.

crypt-protection[.]com scam

There are at least two crypt-protection[.]com variants, one of them says that a device has been infected with 11 viruses after visiting some adult website, and if those viruses will not be removed immediately, then a device, SIM will be damaged and contact list will be deleted.

Another variant offers to install an app that supposed to secure the Internet connection. The first one promotes an app called SmartCrypt, the second one promotes an app called Hotspot Shield VPN & Wifi Proxy. Apps should never be downloaded from/through websites like crypt-protection[.]com.

If a browser opens such pages regularly, then it is likely that some PUA is already installed on it (or the operating system). Quite often PUAs are designed not only to promote pages like crypt-protection[.]com (and other dubious websites, but also to generate advertisements and/or gather various information.

Some examples of ads that PUAs generate are surveys, pop-up ads, coupons, banners. When clicked, those ads tend to open other unreliable pages. Sometimes they can cause unwanted downloads, or even installations. Examples of details that PUAs collect are IP addresses, geolocations, addresses of visited websites, entered search queries.

In some cases they can read sensitive details as well. The biggest issue is that gathered information could be monetized by selling it to third parties (potentially cyber criminals) or misused to generate revenue in other ways.

More examples of deceptive websites that are more or less similar to crypt-protection[.]com are peachtrackereu[.]com, moderation-support[.]network and appleconnect.safellk[.]com. Most of them display fake notifications saying that a device is infected, damaged, etc., and urge visitors to install some PUA.

Another thing that most websites of this type have in common is that they are designed to look like legitimate Apple pages.

How did potentially unwanted applications install on my computer?

It is common for PUAs to be distributed through download and/or installation setups of other programs - by including them as additional offers. This distribution method is known as "bundling". Usually unwanted offers can declined by using "Custom", "Advanced" or other settings, or checkboxes that some download and installation setups have.

Users agree with unwanted offers when download and/or install software without changing default settings. In some cases PUAs are distributed via deceptive advertisements by designing them to run certain scripts. However, users cause unwanted downloads, installations only if they click those ads.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

Third party downloaders, installers, torrent clients, eMule (and other Peer-to-Peer networks), unofficial pages, etc., should not be used to download or install any apps. Apps should be downloaded from official websites and via direct download links. Downloads and installations should not be finished without declining unwanted offers.

Usually it can be done via settings or checkboxes that are included in download and/or installation setups. Advertisements on untrustworthy websites can be designed to cause downloads, installations of unwanted applications as well. Although, in most cases they are used to promote unreliable sites.

Either way, such ads should not be clicked. Additionally, there should be no unwanted, suspicious extensions, add-ons or plug-ins installed on a browser and programs of this type installed on the operating system. If your computer is already infected with PUAs, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate them.
