Ecovector ransomware removal instructions

What is Ecovector?

Ecovector is a ransomware-type virus identical to Green_Ray, Mahasaraswati and JohnyCryptor. After infiltrating computers, Ecovector encrypts various files and appends the name of each encrypted file with the .{ecovector3(@)aol.com}.xtbl extension. To encrypt files ,Ecovector uses asymmetric encryption and, thus, public (encryption) and private (decryption) keys are generated during the encryption process. Furthermore, Ecovector changes desktop wallpapers and creates a 'How to decrypt your files.txt' file, placing it in each folder containing encrypted files.

The wallpaper and text file display a message claiming that files have been encrypted and that users must contact the email address provided to restore them. Note that decryption without the aforementioned private key is impossible. This key is stored on remote servers controlled by developers of Ecovector. To receive this key, users must email three files. Victims will then supposedly receive further instructions will a demand to pay a certain fee. This ransom must be paid in Bitcoins. The size of ransom is currently unknown, however, be aware that cyber criminals often ignore victims even if payment is made. Therefore, never attempt to contact them or pay any ransom. In doing so, you will merely support their malicious businesses and lose your money. Unfortunately, there are no tools capable of restoring files encrypted by Ecovector. Therefore, the only solution is to restore your files/system from a backup.

Research shows that all ransomware has identical behavior. These viruses simply infiltrate systems, encrypt files, and demand ransom payments. The only noticeable differences are the size of ransom and type of encryption algorithm used. Even the distribution methods are identical. Ransomware-type malware is mostly distributed using infectious email attachments (for example, fake job application forms), fake software update applications, peer-to-peer (P2P) networks, and trojans. Therefore, you should keep your installed software up-to-date and be very cautious when downloading files from third party sources (for example, Torrent). Furthermore, never open any attachments sent from unrecognized/suspicious email addresses and use a legitimate anti-virus/anti-spyware suite.

Note that some variants of Ecovector are known to remove Shadow Volume Copies of the files, so this method may not work on all computers.

To restore a file, right-click over it, go into Properties, and select the Previous Versions tab. If the relevant file has a Restore Point, select it and click the "Restore" button.

If you cannot start your computer in Safe Mode with Networking (or with Command Prompt), boot your computer using a rescue disk. Some variants of ransomware disable Safe Mode making its removal complicated. For this step, you require access to another computer.
