GandCrab 5.0.2 ransomware removal instructions

What is GandCrab 5.0.2?

GandCrab 5.0.2 is an updated variant of high-risk ransomware called GANDCRAB V5. Immediately after infiltration, GandCrab 5.0.2 encrypts most stored data and adds a random string as an appendix to each filename. For instance, "sample.jpg" might be renamed to a filename such as "sample.jpg.oapvkylmq". Furthermore, GandCrab 5.0.2 changes the desktop wallpaper and places a text file ("[random]-DECRYPT.txt") on the desktop.

The new desktop wallpaper contains a message stating that data is encrypted and encourages users to read the text file for detailed information. The text file also informs victims of the encryption and claims that data can only be restored using a unique decryption key. Unfortunately, this information is accurate. It is currently unknown which cryptography (symmetric or asymmetric) GandCrab 5.0.2 uses. In any case, each victim receives a unique decryption key required for decryption. All keys are stored on a remote server controlled by GandCrab 5.0.2's developers. Therefore, to receive their keys, victims must visit a Tor website and follow the instructions. The site states that victims must pay a ransom of $800 (in the Bitcoin or DASH cryptocurrency) to receive their keys. If the ransom is not paid within the given time frame (website contains a countdown timer), the cost doubles. Note that, despite these demands, cyber criminals cannot be trusted. Developers of GandCrab 5.0.2 often ignore victims, once payments are submitted. Therefore, paying usually gives no positive result and users are scammed. Therefore, we strongly advise you to ignore requests to submit payments or to contact these people. Unfortunately, there are no tools capable of cracking GandCrab 5.0.2 encryption and restoring data free of charge. Therefore, the only solution is to restore everything from a backup.

GandCrab 5.0.2 decrypt instructions

GandCrab 5.0.2 shares many similarities with Koolova, Dharma-Btc, NOT_OPEN LOCKER, and dozens of other ransomware-type viruses. Although developers of this software are different, these viruses have identical behavior: they encrypt data and make ransom demands. In most cases, size of ransom and type of cryptography used are the only major differences. Unfortunately, most employ algorithms that generate unique decryption keys (e.g., RSA, AES, and so on). Therefore, unless the virus has certain bugs/flaws or is still in development, restoring data manually without involvement of developers (contacting these people is not recommended) is virtually impossible. Ransomware-type viruses present a strong case for maintaining regular data backups, however, it is important to store them on a remote server (e.g., cloud) or unplugged storage device, otherwise ransomware encrypts backups together with regular data.

How did ransomware infect my computer?

Developers promote GandCrab 5.0.2 using spam email campaigns. Criminals send thousands of deceptive emails encouraging users to open malicious attachments. Once opened, however, these files stealthily download and install malware. Ransomware-type viruses are often distributed using trojans, fake software updaters, and unofficial software download sources. Trojans cause chain infections - one virus proliferates another. Fake software updaters infect computers by exploiting outdated software bugs/flaws or simply downloading and installing malware rather than the promised updates. Third party software download sources (peer-to-peer [P2P] networks, third party software download sources, freeware download websites, etc.) present malicious executables as legitimate software. Users are tricked into downloading and installing malware.

How to protect yourself from ransomware infections?

Lack of knowledge and careless behavior are the main reasons for computer infections. Caution is the key to safety. Therefore, pay attention when browsing the Internet and downloading/installing software. Think twice before opening email attachments. Files that are irrelevant and those received from suspicious/unrecognizable email addresses should never be opened. In addition, download your apps from official sources only, using direct download links. Third party downloaders/installers often include rogue apps, and thus these tools should never be used. The same applies to software updates. It is important to keep installed applications up-to-date, however, this should be achieved through implemented features or tools provided by the official developer only. Have a reputable anti-virus/anti-spyware suite installed and running, since these tools can detect and eliminate malware before it does any damage. If your computer is already infected with GandCrab 5.0.2, we recommend running a scan with Spyhunter for Windows to automatically eliminate this ransomware.

To restore individual files encrypted by this ransomware, try using Windows Previous Versions feature. This method is only effective if the System Restore function was enabled on an infected operating system. Note that some variants of GandCrab 5.0.2 are known to remove Shadow Volume Copies of the files, so this method may not work on all computers.

To restore a file, right-click over it, go into Properties, and select the Previous Versions tab. If the relevant file has a Restore Point, select it and click the "Restore" button.

Restoring files encrypted by CryptoDefense

If you cannot start your computer in Safe Mode with Networking (or with Command Prompt), boot your computer using a rescue disk. Some variants of ransomware disable Safe Mode making its removal complicated. For this step, you require access to another computer.

To regain control of the files encrypted by GandCrab 5.0.2, you can also try using a program called Shadow Explorer. More information on how to use this program is available here.

To protect your computer from file encryption ransomware such as this, use reputable antivirus and anti-spyware programs. As an extra protection method, you can use programs called HitmanPro.Alert and EasySync CryptoMonitor, which artificially implant group policy objects into the registry to block rogue programs such as GandCrab 5.0.2 ransomware.

Note that Windows 10 Fall Creators Update includes a "Controlled Folder Access" feature that blocks ransomware attempts to encrypt your files. By default, this feature automatically protects files stored in the Documents, Pictures, Videos, Music, Favorites as well as Desktop folders.

Controll Folder Access

Windows 10 users should install this update to protect their data from ransomware attacks. Here is more information on how to get this update and add an additional protection layer from ransomware infections.
