NEMTY 2.2 REVENGE ransomware removal instructions

What is NEMTY 2.2 REVENGE?

Discovered by GrujaRS, NEMTY 2.2 REVENGE is an updated variant of NEMTY REVENGE 2.0 ransomware. This malware encrypts data and demands ransom payments for decryption. During this process, all files are appended with an extension consisting of ".NEMTY_" and a unique ID, generated individually for each victim (".NEMTY_victim's ID"). For example, a filename such as "1.jpg" might appear as something similar to "1.jpg.NEMTY_JFZ9S5C", and so on for all of compromised files. Once this process is finished, NEMTY 2.2 REVENGE stores a text file on the desktop called "NEMTY_JFZ9S5C-DECRYPT.txt" (the character string is the unique ID, and therefore differs from victim to victim).

The text file informs users that their data has been encrypted and that, if they pay the ransom, they will receive decryption tools/software. Decryption is available for three months (the countdown begins from the moment they visit the NEMTY 2.2 REVENGE website). After this period, the decryption key will be deleted. As this key is necessary for recovery of the files, decryption is impossible once it becomes unavailable. Further instructions are divided into two. The first part instructs victims to open their browser, enter the specified website, upload "NEMTY_JFZ9S5C-DECRYPT.txt" onto it and rely on the instructions therein. The second part instructs them to download/install the Tor browser, open a different link though this browser, upload "NEMTY_JFZ9S5C-DECRYPT.txt" and receive more instructions. The site opened in the Tor browser reiterates that the victims' data has been encrypted and lists the date until decryption ceases being a viable option. The ransom (cost of decryption tools) is stated to be approximately $1000 in the Bitcoin cryptocurrency (currently, 0.14457759 BTC). This web page also lists recommendations/instructions concerning this transaction (where to create a cryptowallet, the cyber criminals' wallet address, etc.). After this transaction is made (the full sum has been paid), victims are instructed to reload the page and receive a link to download the necessary decryption tools/software. The website also has a chat window in case users need more details about this process. In most cases of ransomware infections, manual decryption using third party software is not possible, unless the malware is still in development and/or has certain flaws/bugs. Regardless, you are strongly advised against communicating with and/or meeting the demands of cyber criminals. Despite paying, victims often receive none of the promised tools/software, which leaves their files encrypted and useless. To prevent NEMTY 2.2 REVENGE from further encryption, it must be removed from the system, however, removal will not restore already affected data. The only solution is to recover it from a backup, if one was made before the infection and stored separately.

LockBitBigBossRoss, and MarioLocker are some examples of other ransomware programs. All malicious programs within this category encrypt data and demand ransoms to be paid. Crucial differences between these infections include the cryptographic algorithm they use (symmetric or asymmetric) and size of the payment. To protect files against data encryption and damaging attacks, backups should be kept on remote servers and/or unplugged storage devices. Ideally, several backups should be stored in different locations.

How did ransomware infect my computer?

Ransomware and other malware mainly proliferates via trojans, spam campaigns, illegal software activation ("cracking") tools, fake updaters and untrustworthy download sources (Peer-to-Peer sharing networks, unofficial and free file-hosting websites, third party downloaders and similar). Trojans are malicious programs designed to cause chain infections (i.e., download/install additional malware). Spam campaigns are used to send deceptive emails on a mass scale. These message are usually disguised as "official", "important", "urgent" and so on. They contain infectious files (or links leading to them), and they come in formats including archive and executable files, Microsoft Office and PDF documents, JavaScript, etc. When they are run, executed or otherwise opened, this triggers them to begin infecting the system. Rather than activating licensed products, illegal activation ("cracking") tools can download/install malicious software. Fake updaters exploit weaknesses in outdated programs and/or simply install malware rather than the updates. Untrustworthy and dubious download channels are more likely to offer malicious content (disguised as normal software and/or bundled with it).

How to protect yourself from ransomware infections

Suspicious/Irrelevant emails should not be opened, especially those received from unknown senders. All attachments and links found in suspect emails must never be opened, as these files are the source of a potential infection. You are advised to use only official and verified download channels. Software should be activated and updated with tools/functions provided by legitimate developers. Illegal activation ("cracking") tools and third party updaters should not be used, due to high-risk of malware installation. It is paramount to have a reputable anti-virus/anti-spyware suite installed and kept updated. Furthermore, it should be used for regular system scans and removal of detected threats. If your computer is already infected with NEMTY 2.2 REVENGE, we recommend running a scan with Malwarebytes for Windows to automatically eliminate this ransomware.

Update January 3, 2020 - The Tesorion cyber security company has recently released a decryption tool capable of restoring data encrypted by NEMTY 2.2 REVENGE and NEMTY 2.3 REVENGE ransomware infections. Unfortunately, at this time, the tool is capable of restoring only certain file formats (.docx, .pptx, .xlsx). Nevertheless, it is very likely that Tesorion will continue updating this decryption tool and enhancing its capabilities. You can find the decryptor download link and user manual on the NoMoreRansom website.

To restore individual files encrypted by this ransomware, try using Windows Previous Versions feature. This method is only effective if the System Restore function was enabled on an infected operating system. Note that some variants of NEMTY 2.2 REVENGE are known to remove Shadow Volume Copies of the files, so this method may not work on all computers.

To restore a file, right-click over it, go into Properties, and select the Previous Versions tab. If the relevant file has a Restore Point, select it and click the "Restore" button.

If you cannot start your computer in Safe Mode with Networking (or with Command Prompt), boot your computer using a rescue disk. Some variants of ransomware disable Safe Mode making its removal complicated. For this step, you require access to another computer.

To regain control of the files encrypted by NEMTY 2.2 REVENGE, you can also try using a program called Shadow Explorer. More information on how to use this program is available here.

To protect your computer from file encryption ransomware such as this, use reputable antivirus and anti-spyware programs. As an extra protection method, you can use programs called HitmanPro.Alert and EasySync CryptoMonitor, which artificially implant group policy objects into the registry to block rogue programs such as NEMTY 2.2 REVENGE ransomware.

Note that Windows 10 Fall Creators Update includes a "Controlled Folder Access" feature that blocks ransomware attempts to encrypt your files. By default, this feature automatically protects files stored in the Documents, Pictures, Videos, Music, Favorites, and Desktop folders.
