Crypted000007 ransomware removal instructions
What is Crypted000007?
Crypted000007 is a ransomware-type virus which belongs to the Troldesh family. Like most viruses of this type, it is designed to encrypt files and make them unusable until a ransom is paid. This particular virus renames files so that they comprise a line of characters and digits and adds the ".crypted000007" extension to each. For example, after encryption, the file "1.jpg" might have an appearance similar to this example: "hmv8IGQE5oYCLEd2IS3wZQ==.135DB21A6CE65DAEFE26.crypted000007". Furthermore, Crypted000007 creates ten ransom-demand messages (with identical content) called "README1.txt", "README2.txt" ... "README10.txt" and places them on the desktop. This virus also changes the desktop wallpaper.
The modified desktop wallpaper informs users (in English and Russian) that files on disks are encrypted and that decryption (and other) details can be found in the "README.txt" files. According to the information provided in these text files, users must contact cyber criminals (Crypted000007 developers) using the email address provided. The email should contain a code that will allow them to identify the user. Once the email is sent, the user must wait for further instructions about how to decrypt files. According to the cyber criminals, if no instructions are received within 48 hours, the user should use a feedback form. As explained in the README.txt files, to use the feedback form, the Tor web browser must be downloaded and installed and a website address (one of two provided) must be opened. Once the form is completed and sent, new instructions about how to decrypt the files are supposedly provided. No other details are given, such as whether cyber criminals use a symmetric or asymmetric encryption algorithm, size of ransom, or how soon it must be paid. Despite these demands and threats, cyber criminals should not be trusted. They ignore victims even if the demands are met. Therefore, ignore all requests to pay any ransoms. Unfortunately, it is impossible to decrypt files free of charge, since no tool is capable of this function. The only free solution is to restore all lost files from a backup created prior to infiltration of this virus.
Screenshot of a message encouraging users to pay a ransom to decrypt their compromised data:
Crypted000007 is similar to many other ransomware-type viruses, such as Vanss, GusCrypter, Betta, etc. Most encrypt data and makes ransom demands. Ransomware-type viruses typically have two major differences: size of a ransom and type of encryption algorithm used. Unfortunately, they often use algorithms that generate unique/individual decryption keys. Unless the virus is not fully developed or has certain bugs/flaws, restoring data manually without involvement of Crypted000007 ransomware developers is virtually impossible. Therefore, maintain regular backups and store them on a remote server (such as Cloud) or unplugged storage device. If not, backups are often encrypted with other regular files stored on the system.
How did ransomware infect my computer?
To proliferate ransomware-type viruses, developers often use trojans, spam email campaigns, fake software update tools, P2P (peer-to-peer) networks, and third party software download sources. Trojans are malicious programs that cause chain infections - they proliferate other viruses. Spam campaigns spread email attachments that, once opened, download and install malicious software. Fake software updaters cause virus infections by exploiting outdated software bugs/flaws or simply downloading and installing malware rather than the updates. P2P networks (and other unofficial download sources) present malicious executables as legitimate software. This often tricks users into downloading and installing viruses.
|Threat Type||Ransomware, Crypto Virus, Files locker|
|Symptoms||Can't open files stored on your computer, previously functional files now have a different extension, for example my.docx.locked. A ransom demanding message is displayed on your desktop. Cyber criminals are asking to pay a ransom (usually in bitcoins) to unlock your files.|
|Distribution methods||Infected email attachments (macros), torrent websites, malicious ads.|
|Damage||All files are encrypted and cannot be opened without paying a ransom. Additional password stealing trojans and malware infections can be installed together with a ransomware infection.|
To eliminate Crypted000007 virus our malware researchers recommend scanning your computer with Spyhunter.
How to protect yourself from ransomware infections?
Pay attention while browsing the web and installing/downloading or updating software. Do not open email attachments without first ensuring that they are trustworthy. Files that seem irrelevant and those received from suspicious/unrecognizable email addresses should never be opened. Download software from official, trustworthy sources, and using direct download links only. Bear in mind that third party downloaders/installers often include rogue applications, and so we recommend that you avoid using them. Keep installed applications up-to-date, but implemented features or tools provided by the official developer only. Having a reputable anti-virus/anti-spyware suite installed and running is also very important. This will help you to detect and terminate malware before it does any harm to your computer or compromised your privacy. If your computer is already infected with Crypted000007, we recommend running a scan with Spyhunter for Windows to automatically eliminate this ransomware.

4. In the opened window, click "Next".
5. Select one of the available Restore Points and click "Next" (this will restore your computer system to an earlier time and date, prior to the Crypted000007 ransomware virus infiltrating your PC).
6. In the opened window, click "Yes".
7. After restoring your computer to a previous date, download and scan your PC with recommended malware removal software to eliminate any remaining Crypted000007 ransomware files.
To restore individual files encrypted by this ransomware, try using Windows Previous Versions feature. This method is only effective if the System Restore function was enabled on an infected operating system. Note that some variants of Crypted000007 are known to remove Shadow Volume Copies of the files, so this method may not work on all computers.
To restore a file, right-click over it, go into Properties, and select the Previous Versions tab. If the relevant file has a Restore Point, select it and click the "Restore" button.
If you cannot start your computer in Safe Mode with Networking (or with Command Prompt), boot your computer using a rescue disk. Some variants of ransomware disable Safe Mode making its removal complicated. For this step, you require access to another computer.
To protect your computer from file encryption ransomware such as this, use reputable antivirus and anti-spyware programs. As an extra protection method, you can use programs called HitmanPro.Alert and EasySync CryptoMonitor, which artificially implant group policy objects into the registry to block rogue programs such as Crypted000007 ransomware.
Note that Windows 10 Fall Creators Update includes a "Controlled Folder Access" feature that blocks ransomware attempts to encrypt your files. By default, this feature automatically protects files stored in the Documents, Pictures, Videos, Music, Favorites as well as Desktop folders.
Windows 10 users should install this update to protect their data from ransomware attacks. Here is more information on how to get this update and add an additional protection layer from ransomware infections.
