india2lock ransomware removal instructions

What is india2lock?

Discovered by JAMESWT, india2lock is just one of many ransomware-type programs. It encrypts data, changes the victim's wallpaper and creates a ransom message within the "HOW TO DECRYPT FILES.txt" text file. People with computers infected by india2lock cannot access their files unless they pay a ransom (purchase a decryption tool/key). This ransomware renames all encrypted files by adding the ".Crypted" extension. For example, "1.jpg" becomes "1.jpg.Crypted".

It changes the victim's wallpaper to a form of BSoD (Blue Screen of Death, also known as a 'stop error') image. It also displays a pop-up window stating that all documents, databases, backups, and other files stored on the system have been encoded with a strong encryption. Cyber criminals who developed india2lock also inform victims that reinstalling the operating system will not help. In fact, they state that only they can help victims to retrieve their files - victims are encouraged to follow the instructions, which can be viewed by clicking the "Decryption instructions" button on the left pane. The decryption instructions state that the cost of decryption is 0.05 of Bitcoin and payment must be made within 24 hours after decryption. Victims are provided with a Bitcoin wallet address that can be found in the "Get the key" section. It is stated that, if payment is not made in time (within 24 hours), the cost will increase to 0.1 BTC, and after 48 hours, all files will be deleted permanently. Once payment is made, victims should send transaction details to india2lock developers via the email address. They will then confirm payment and send a decryption key to victims that will unlock (decrypt) their files. The "HOW TO DECRYPT FILES.txt" ransom message contains identical information. Cyber criminals cannot be trusted and not be paid. Typically, they provide no decryption tools, even if their demands are met. Ransomware-type programs cause encryptions that can be decrypted only using tools held by ransomware developers. This is also the case with india2lock. The only way to recover files without paying a ransom is to use a data backup and restore everything from there.

All ransomware-type programs are similar. Some examples are Mcold, Radman, and 4k. These programs prevent victims from accessing their files by encryption and keep the files locked unless a ransom is paid. Main differences between these programs are usually size of a ransom (cost of decryption) and cryptography algorithm (symmetric or asymmetric) used to encrypt files. The biggest problem is that most encryptions caused by ransomware-type programs are impossible to decrypt without using the correct tools - only cyber criminals have these. Decryption without the involvement of cyber criminals is usually only possible if the program is still in development (has bugs/flaws). Therefore, maintain regular backups to avoid data/financial loss. Store them on a remote server or unplugged storage device.

How did ransomware infect my computer?

Cyber criminals distribute ransomware and other malicious programs in various ways. For example, they often use spam campaigns. They send emails that contain attachments or web links that lead to malicious files. The main goal is to trick people into opening the included attachment, which could be a Microsoft Office or PDF document, archive file such as RAR, ZIP, an executable file (.exe), JavaScript file, and so on. Once opened, the file causes download and installation of ransomware or other malware. Another way to distribute these computer infections is through dubious software download sources. For example, Peer-to-Peer networks such as torrent clients, eMule, and so on, freeware download websites, free file hosting pages, unofficial pages, and so on. Cyber criminals use these channels to disguise malicious files as legitimate. If people download and open them, they infect their computers with a high-risk virus. Furthermore, software 'cracking' tools can be used to proliferate malicious programs. People use these tools to activate software free of charge, however, they are often used by cyber criminals to cause download and installation of malicious programs. Fake/unofficial software updating tools infect systems by exploiting bugs and flaws of installed and outdated software, or by downloading and installing malware rather than updates or fixes. Trojans are malicious programs that, if installed, cause chain infections and proliferate other viruses.

How to protect yourself from ransomware infections?

Do not open attachments or web links presented in irrelevant emails and received from unknown, suspicious addresses. Software should be downloaded from official websites using direct links. Avoid third party downloaders, installers, unofficial pages, and other similar channels. It is important to update installed software using tools or functions provided by official developers only. Other (third party) tools might cause serious damage. The same applies to software 'cracking' tools - using them is illegal and can lead to computer infections. Keep your computer safe by having reputable anti-virus or anti-spyware software installed and enabled at all times. These programs detect and remove threats before they can harm the system. If your computer is already infected with india2lock, we recommend running a scan with Malwarebytes for Windows to automatically eliminate this ransomware.

5. Select one of the available Restore Points and click "Next" (this will restore your computer system to an earlier time and date, prior to the india2lock ransomware virus infiltrating your PC).

select a restore point

6. In the opened window, click "Yes".

run system restore

7. After restoring your computer to a previous date, download and scan your PC with recommended malware removal software to eliminate any remaining india2lock ransomware files.

To restore individual files encrypted by this ransomware, try using Windows Previous Versions feature. This method is only effective if the System Restore function was enabled on an infected operating system. Note that some variants of india2lock are known to remove Shadow Volume Copies of the files, so this method may not work on all computers.

To restore a file, right-click over it, go into Properties, and select the Previous Versions tab. If the relevant file has a Restore Point, select it and click the "Restore" button.

Restoring files encrypted by CryptoDefense

If you cannot start your computer in Safe Mode with Networking (or with Command Prompt), boot your computer using a rescue disk. Some variants of ransomware disable Safe Mode making its removal complicated. For this step, you require access to another computer.

To regain control of the files encrypted by india2lock, you can also try using a program called Shadow Explorer. More information on how to use this program is available here.

To protect your computer from file encryption ransomware such as this, use reputable antivirus and anti-spyware programs. As an extra protection method, you can use programs called HitmanPro.Alert and EasySync CryptoMonitor, which artificially implant group policy objects into the registry to block rogue programs such as india2lock ransomware.

Note that Windows 10 Fall Creators Update includes a "Controlled Folder Access" feature that blocks ransomware attempts to encrypt your files. By default, this feature automatically protects files stored in the Documents, Pictures, Videos, Music, Favorites as well as Desktop folders.

Controll Folder Access

Windows 10 users should install this update to protect their data from ransomware attacks. Here is more information on how to get this update and add an additional protection layer from ransomware infections.
