Poop ransomware removal instructions

What is Poop?

Discovered by Petrovic, Poop is the name of a ransomware-type program that encrypts files stored on an infected computer and keeps them locked unless a ransom is paid. Poop changes the wallpaper to an image of a pile of 'poop', creates a text file ("READ_IT.txt"), and displays a pop-up window. It renames each encrypted file by adding the ".poop" extension. For example, "1.jpg" becomes "1.jpg.poop". Additionally, Poop runs the "Ranso" process in the Task Manager of infected computers/operating systems.

The pop-up window and "READ_IT.txt" text file states that Poop has encrypted files with a high level (military grade) encryption algorithm called AES-256. Victims are informed that any attempts to decrypt files with the help of third party tools or other people will expose encrypted files to cyber criminals on dark web forums. To decrypt their files, victims are encouraged to sign up for Telegram and then to contact Poop's developer/s via the @CyberDexter account. To purchase a decryption tool victims must send 0.12277114 Bitcoin to the BTC wallet address provided. As 'proof' of the transaction, victims must also send a screenshot of the payment. Cyber criminals will then supposedly send the correct decryption key. Note, however, that there is a strong possibility that they will not do this. Typically, when cyber criminals are paid, they disappear and do not reply to victims. Therefore, people who trust ransomware developers often become victims of a scam. Unfortunately, only Poop's developers will have the decryption key. Most ransomware-type programs use strong encryptions that cannot be decrypted without the correct tools. Typically, the only way to recover files in such cases is to use a backup.

Gerosan, Html and Myskle are ransomware-type infections that are similar to Poop - there are many others, and the number is growing daily. Typically, these programs are used encrypt data and blackmail victims by forcing them to pay ransoms. The main differences are usually encryption algorithm used and cost of decryption tool and key. Unfortunately, people who have computers infected with ransomware are often tempted to contact cyber criminals, since no other parties can provide the correct decryption tools. Decryption without their involvement is possible only if the ransomware is not fully developed, contains bugs, flaws, etc. To prevent data loss caused by programs of this type, maintain data backups and store them on remote servers or unplugged storage devices.

How did ransomware infect my computer?

Cyber criminals use various ways to infect computers with ransomware-type and other malicious programs. Typically, they use spam campaigns, fake software updaters, dubious software download sources, trojans and software 'cracking' tools. Spam campaigns are used to proliferate ransomware (or other malware) through attachments. If opened, these download and install malicious software. Some examples of files that cyber criminals attach to these emails are Microsoft Office documents, archive or executable files, PDF documents, JavaScript files and so on. Fake software updater tools infect systems by exploiting flaws/bugs of outdated software or by downloading and installing malware rather than updating or fixing installed programs. Dubious software download channels include P2P networks (torrent clients, eMule and others), freeware download websites, free file hosting websites and other similar sources. They are used to disguise malicious executables or other files as legitimate. If downloaded and opened, they install ransomware or other threats. Trojans are malicious programs that cause damage if they are installed - they cause chain-infections (download and install malware). If a trojan is already installed, it is possible that it has also caused infiltration of a ransomware-type virus. When people use software 'cracking' tools, they expect to bypass software activation (avoid payment), however, in many cases, these tools download and install malware instead.

How to protect yourself from ransomware infections?

Be cautious when browsing the web, installing, downloading and updating software. Avoid opening attachments or links included in irrelevant emails. Typically, these are sent from unknown addresses and presented as legitimate or official. Keep installed software up-to-date, however, use implemented functions or tools provided by official developers. Do not download software from untrustworthy and unofficial websites, using third party downloaders and other sources mentioned above. Download using official sites. If an installed program requires payment, it should be activated properly. It is illegal to use 'cracking' tools and they often infect systems with high-risk malware. Have reputable anti-spyware or anti-virus software installed and run virus scans regularly. If your computer is already infected with Poop, we recommend running a scan with Spyhunter for Windows to automatically eliminate this ransomware.

6. In the opened window, click "Yes".

run system restore

7. After restoring your computer to a previous date, download and scan your PC with recommended malware removal software to eliminate any remaining Poop ransomware files.

To restore individual files encrypted by this ransomware, try using Windows Previous Versions feature. This method is only effective if the System Restore function was enabled on an infected operating system. Note that some variants of Poop are known to remove Shadow Volume Copies of the files, so this method may not work on all computers.

To restore a file, right-click over it, go into Properties, and select the Previous Versions tab. If the relevant file has a Restore Point, select it and click the "Restore" button.

Restoring files encrypted by CryptoDefense

If you cannot start your computer in Safe Mode with Networking (or with Command Prompt), boot your computer using a rescue disk. Some variants of ransomware disable Safe Mode making its removal complicated. For this step, you require access to another computer.

To regain control of the files encrypted by Poop, you can also try using a program called Shadow Explorer. More information on how to use this program is available here.

To protect your computer from file encryption ransomware such as this, use reputable antivirus and anti-spyware programs. As an extra protection method, you can use programs called HitmanPro.Alert and EasySync CryptoMonitor, which artificially implant group policy objects into the registry to block rogue programs such as Poop ransomware.

Note that Windows 10 Fall Creators Update includes a "Controlled Folder Access" feature that blocks ransomware attempts to encrypt your files. By default, this feature automatically protects files stored in the Documents, Pictures, Videos, Music, Favorites as well as Desktop folders.

Controll Folder Access

Windows 10 users should install this update to protect their data from ransomware attacks. Here is more information on how to get this update and add an additional protection layer from ransomware infections.
