What is "BadutClowns Team"?

"BadutClowns Team" is the title of a screenlocker ransomware. Credit for discovery belongs to malware researcher Raby. It operates by encrypting the data of infected systems and locking the screen - in order to demand a ransom for the decryption and unlocking. When the infection process begins, a fake Windows update screen is displayed. During the encryption, affected files are appended with the ".badutclowns" infection; for example a file like "1.jpg" would appear as "1.jpg.badutclowns". The text presented on the locked screen is the ransom note.

BadutClowns Team ransom note

The ransom-demanding message informs victims that their data has been encrypted by "BadutClowns Team". To restore the compromised files to their original state, the note provides steps by step instructions. Firstly, users are to create a Bitcoin cryptocurrency wallet and purchase 200 USD worth of Bitcoins. This sum is to be sent to the cyber criminals' Bitcoin address. The ID assigned to the infected system (located in the message) has to be sent to the criminals via email. Following the verification of payment, victims are promised to be sent the decryption key. Lastly, once the recovery key is obtained - users are instructed to enter it into the field displayed below and click "Decrypt". This will initiate the decryption process. In most cases of ransomware infections, without the interference of criminals behind the infection - decryption is impossible. It might be, if the malicious program is still in development and/or has significant bugs (flaws). Whatever the case, it is expressly advised against meeting the ransom demands. Cyber criminals are not to be trusted and often, despite paying - victims do not receive the necessary decryption tools/keys. Therefore, not only does their data remain encrypted but they also experience financial losses. Removing "BadutClowns Team" from the OS (Operating System) will prevent it from further encryptions and unlock the screen. Unfortunately, removal will not restore already encrypted files. The sole possible solution is recovering them from a backup, if one was created before the infection and was stored in a different location.

"CRITICAL WARNING!", "ERROR_LOCAL_USER_BX06DE4897_MD9858", "StalinLocker" are a few examples of screen-locking malware and OnixParrotRagnar Locker - are other ransomware-type programs. The former can claim that the screens were locked by the OS developers (e.g. Windows) and offer fake and expensive technical support services, or that it was done by the authorities due to illegal content stored therein - and require a fine to be paid to restore access, and so on. There are two main differences between data-encrypting infections: the cryptographic algorithm they use (symmetric or asymmetric) and the demanded ransom size. To protect data integrity, it is recommended to keep backups in remote servers and/or unplugged storage devices.

How did ransomware install on my computer?

Ransomware and other malware mainly proliferate through trojans, spam campaigns, software "cracking" (activation) tools, fake updates and untrustworthy download channels. Trojans are malicious programs with varied heinous abilities, which can include the ability to download/install additional malware. Spam campaigns are used to send thousands of deceptive emails, containing infectious files attached (or links leading to them). Virulent files come in a variety of formats, e.g. archive (ZIP, RAR) and executable (.exe, .run) files, Microsoft Office and PDF documents, JavaScript and so on. When they are opened - it initiates the infection process. Rather than activate licensed programs, illegal activation tools ("cracks") can download/install malware. Fake updaters infect systems by exploiting flaws of outdated software and/or by installing malware instead of the updates. Untrustworthy download channels, like: unofficial and free file-hosting sites, P2P sharing networks (BitTorrent, Gnutella, eMule, etc.) and other third party downloaders - can offer malicious software for downloading.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

It is recommended not to open suspicious and/or irrelevant emails, especially ones received from suspect/unknown addresses. All attachments (or links) found in dubious mail - must never be opened, as they are a potential source of infection. Only official and verified download channels should be used. Additionally, programs are to be activated and updated with tools/functions, provided by genuine developers. Illegal activation ("cracking") tools and third party updaters - are considered to be high-risk and can download/install malware. It is strongly advised to have a reputable anti-virus/anti-spyware installed and kept updated. Furthermore, this software is to be used for regular system scans and elimination of detected threats/issues. If your computer is already infected with PUAs, we recommend running a scan with Spyhunter for Windows to automatically eliminate them.
