What is 2k19cry?

Discovered by dnwls0719, 2k19cry is a part of the Paradise ransomware family (and similar to 2k19sys). These programs are designed to encrypt (lock) files and deny access to them unless a ransom is paid. This particular ransomware renames all encrypted files by adding a random string of characters plus the victim's personal ID, an email address, and the ".2k19cry" extension to the filenames. For example, "1.jpg" might become "1.jpg_nJjMoz_{hannacry@p-security.li}.2k19cry". In addition, 2k19cry displays the ransom message in a pop-up window and creates another in a text file named "-=###_INFO_you_FILE_###=-.txt".

The pop-up window states that victims who want to restore their files must contact 2k19cry developers by sending an email to hannacry@p-security.li. The size of ransom is unknown, however, it is stated that the cost of decryption depends on how quickly victims contact the cyber criminals who developed this ransomware. Payment must be paid in Bitcoin. Victims are also permitted to send 1-2 files, which the cyber criminals promise to decrypt free of charge. They also promise to send a decryption tool after payment, however, never trust cyber criminals (ransomware developers) even if they decrypt some files free of charge. Promises are often made with no real intention of keeping them. People who send money risk being scammed. Unfortunately, most ransomware-type programs lock files using strong encryptions that are impossible to decode without the tools/keys held only by cyber criminals. Therefore, victims are encouraged to contact cyber criminals and meet their demands. To avoid possible financial and data loss, do not trust cyber criminals (pay ransoms) and restore your files from a backup.

2k19cry decrypt instructions

2k19cry is similar to other programs of this type including, for example, Londec, BORISHORSE, and Arsium. These programs are generally designed to block access to data and create/display ransom messages (containing instructions about how to pay ransoms). Two main differences are usually cost of decryption and cryptographic algorithm (symmetric or asymmetric) used to encode data. Unfortunately, decryption without the correct tools is impossible, since only cyber criminals who designed the program have the tools/keys. In rare cases, it is possible to 'crack' these programs, however, this is only if they are not complete (have bugs/flaws). To avoid data and financial loss caused by programs of this type, have your data backed up and keep it on a remote server (such as Cloud) or unplugged storage device.

How did ransomware infect my computer?

There are a number of ways to proliferate ransomware or other high-risk malware. Typically, cyber criminals achieve this through trojans, spam campaigns (emails), dubious file or software download sources, unofficial software update or activation tools. Trojans are malicious programs designed to proliferate other programs of this type, thus causing chain infections. To be effective, however, trojans must already be installed on the operating system. Spam campaigns also infect computers with malware. Cyber criminals often send emails that contain malicious files (attachments) and hope that recipients open them. These emails are usually presented as 'important and official'. Examples of files that they attach are Microsoft Office or PDF documents, JavaScript files, archives such as ZIP, RAR, executable files (.exe and others), and so on. Cyber criminals who proliferate ransomware through these emails aim to trick people into opening the attachments (or web links that leads to them). Examples of dubious file or software download channels are Peer-to-Peer networks (torrent clients, eMule, etc.), unofficial pages, free file hosting, freeware download websites, various third party downloaders, and so on. Cyber criminals use these channels to disguise malicious files as harmless and regular. If downloaded and opened, however, they often cause installation of malicious software. Third party (unofficial) software update tools damage/infect computers by downloading and installing malware rather than updating installed programs, or by exploiting bugs/flaws of already installed, outdated software. Unofficial activation tools infect systems in a similar manner - they download and install malware rather than activating installed, paid software free of charge.

How to protect yourself from ransomware infections?

Carefully study emails that contains attachments, especially if the emails are irrelevant or received from unknown, suspicious addresses. Do not download or install software using third party downloaders or installers. Also, do not use the other tools mentioned above. The safest way to download software and programs is to using official, trustworthy websites and direct download links. You are strongly advised to update installed programs with tools or functions designed by official software developers. The same applies to software activation. Third party 'cracking' tools are illegal. Finally, remember that your computer is safer with a reputable anti-virus or anti-spyware suite installed. If your computer is already infected with 2k19cry, we recommend running a scan with Spyhunter for Windows to automatically eliminate this ransomware.

6. In the opened window, click "Yes".

run system restore

7. After restoring your computer to a previous date, download and scan your PC with recommended malware removal software to eliminate any remaining 2k19cry ransomware files.

To restore individual files encrypted by this ransomware, try using Windows Previous Versions feature. This method is only effective if the System Restore function was enabled on an infected operating system. Note that some variants of 2k19cry are known to remove Shadow Volume Copies of the files, so this method may not work on all computers.

To restore a file, right-click over it, go into Properties, and select the Previous Versions tab. If the relevant file has a Restore Point, select it and click the "Restore" button.

If you cannot start your computer in Safe Mode with Networking (or with Command Prompt), boot your computer using a rescue disk. Some variants of ransomware disable Safe Mode making its removal complicated. For this step, you require access to another computer.

To regain control of the files encrypted by 2k19cry, you can also try using a program called Shadow Explorer. More information on how to use this program is available here.

To protect your computer from file encryption ransomware such as this, use reputable antivirus and anti-spyware programs. As an extra protection method, you can use programs called HitmanPro.Alert and EasySync CryptoMonitor, which artificially implant group policy objects into the registry to block rogue programs such as 2k19cry ransomware.

Note that Windows 10 Fall Creators Update includes a "Controlled Folder Access" feature that blocks ransomware attempts to encrypt your files. By default, this feature automatically protects files stored in the Documents, Pictures, Videos, Music, Favorites as well as Desktop folders.

Controll Folder Access

Windows 10 users should install this update to protect their data from ransomware attacks. Here is more information on how to get this update and add an additional protection layer from ransomware infections.
