What is .RABBIT?

.RABBIT is written in Python programming language, it was discovered by dnwls0719. It is designed to encrypt files with AES-256 algorithm, change their filenames by appending the ".RABBIT" extension and create the "อ่านวิธีแก้ไฟล์โดนล๊อค.txt" text file, a ransom note which is written in Thai language and can be found in folders that contain encrypted files. Example of how .RABBIT modifies filenames: it renames "1.jpg" to "1.jpg.RABBIT", "2.jpg" to "2.jpg.RABBIT", etc.

All "อ่านวิธีแก้ไฟล์โดนล๊อค.txt" ransom notes contain a website link which opens a page which with instructions on how to pay a ransom and some other details. As explained in that website, files can be decrypted only with certain decryption key which costs 0.0400 of Bitcoin. The ransom has to be paid by transferring the aforementioned amount of Bitcoin cryptocurrency to the provided wallet address. Before making a payment victims can send 1 encrypted file to, cyber criminals behind .RABBIT offer to decrypt it for free. Unfortunately, there are no free tools that could decrypt files encrypted by .RABBIT, at least not at the moment. Programs of this type encrypt data with strong encryption algorithms sot that victims could not decrypt it without tools that can be purchased only from cyber criminals. In such cases the only way to recover files without having to use any decryption tools is to restore them from a backup. It is strongly recommended not to pay a ransom to cyber criminals behind any ransomware - very often they do not send any decryption tools even if victims pay them. It is worthwhile to mention that victims can prevent installed ransomware from encrypting unencrypted files by uninstalling it from the operating system. Nevertheless, it does not make encrypted files accessible - they remain encrypted even when ransomware is no longer installed.

There is a great number of other ransomware-type programs, some examples are .java, Lxhlp and .support. As a rule, they are designed to block access to files and create and/or display a ransom note with instructions on how to contact cyber criminals, pay a ransom and/or some other information. Usually the only main differences are price of a decryption and encryption algorithm (symmetric or asymmetric) that ransomware uses to encrypt files. Most of the times cyber criminals behind ransomware are the only ones who have tools that can decrypt victim's data. It is possible to decrypt files without their tools only when ransomware has some bugs, flaws, or other vulnerabilities. Unfortunately, it does not happen of then and that is why it is important to always have data backed up and keep it on a remote server (like Cloud) or some unplugged storage device.

How did ransomware infect my computer?

It is common that cyber criminals attempt to trick users into installing malware by using malspam campaigns (emails). They send emails that have malicious files attached to them (or links to malicious websites). If opened/executed, those attachments install malicious software, in this case ransomware. Examples of files that cyber criminals attach are malicious Microsoft Office, PDF documents, archive files like RAR, ZIP, executable files (like .exe) and JavaScript. Another way to get a computer infected with malware is through malicious programs called Trojans. Quite often such programs are designed to cause chain infections - after installation they install some other software of this kind. Unreliable software download channels like unofficial websites, freeware download websites, free file hosting pages, Peer-to-Peer networks (e.g., torrent clients, eMule and), third party downloaders, etc., can be used to proliferate malicious programs too. They get installed when users download and open malicious files. Typically, those files are disguised as legitimate, harmless. Users who use fake software updaters often install unwanted, malicious software instead of installing updates. Also, such updates can infect computers by exploiting bugs, flaws of outdated software that is installed on them. One more way to infect a system is by using various software 'cracking' tools (unofficial activators). These tools supposed to illegally bypass activation of licensed software, although, instead of doing that they can install some malware.

How to protect yourself from ransomware infections?

Files and programs should be downloaded only from official, trustworthy pages and through direct links. Other tools, channels like third party downloaders (and installers), Peer-to-Peer networks, unofficial sites, etc., should not be trusted - cyber criminals often use them to proliferate malicious programs. Operating system and installed software must be updated and/or activated only with implemented functions and/or tools that are provided (designed) by the official developers. Unofficial activation ('cracking') tools, fake updaters tend to be designed to install malware. Besides, it is not legal to activate licensed software any third party, unofficial tools. Attachments and/or links in irrelevant emails that were received from suspicious, unknown addresses should not be opened. In most cases such emails are sent by cyber criminals who attempt to trick recipients into installing malware on their computers. Usually they disguise their emails as important, official, etc. And finally, it is recommended to regularly scan a computer with a reputable antivirus anti-spyware software and always keep it up to date. If your computer is already infected with .RABBIT, we recommend running a scan with Malwarebytes for Windows to automatically eliminate this ransomware.

7. After restoring your computer to a previous date, download and scan your PC with recommended malware removal software to eliminate any remaining .RABBIT ransomware files.

To restore individual files encrypted by this ransomware, try using Windows Previous Versions feature. This method is only effective if the System Restore function was enabled on an infected operating system. Note that some variants of .RABBIT are known to remove Shadow Volume Copies of the files, so this method may not work on all computers.

To restore a file, right-click over it, go into Properties, and select the Previous Versions tab. If the relevant file has a Restore Point, select it and click the "Restore" button.

Restoring files encrypted by CryptoDefense

If you cannot start your computer in Safe Mode with Networking (or with Command Prompt), boot your computer using a rescue disk. Some variants of ransomware disable Safe Mode making its removal complicated. For this step, you require access to another computer.

To regain control of the files encrypted by .RABBIT, you can also try using a program called Shadow Explorer. More information on how to use this program is available here.

To protect your computer from file encryption ransomware such as this, use reputable antivirus and anti-spyware programs. As an extra protection method, you can use programs called HitmanPro.Alert and EasySync CryptoMonitor, which artificially implant group policy objects into the registry to block rogue programs such as .RABBIT ransomware.

Note that Windows 10 Fall Creators Update includes a "Controlled Folder Access" feature that blocks ransomware attempts to encrypt your files. By default, this feature automatically protects files stored in the Documents, Pictures, Videos, Music, Favorites, and Desktop folders.

Controll Folder Access

Windows 10 users should install this update to protect their data from ransomware attacks. Here is more information on how to get this update and add an additional protection layer from ransomware infections.
